I'm throwing away an oldass computer today, dropping it off at the recycling center at lunch hopefully, and a 15" CRT. It was Meg's old pentium 1 HP from college.

Apple got rid of the "box under the desk with expansion slots" in 1984. To be fair, they started the "problem" in the first place, however. Prior to the Apple II, PC's were "all-in-one" boxes with no expansion slots. (Obviously, I'm discounting the entire S-100 class of machines such as the Altair, Imsai, etc., as they weren't really mass-market devices.) These days, every major manufacturer has dozens of computers that only require one cable for power. The ones without batteries are called "all-in-ones." The ones with batteries go by the terms laptop, netbook, tablet, etc. One board "all the way? I carry that in a pouch on my belt. Some folks keep theirs in a magazine-sized sleeve. Actually, I'm typing this on one right now. It's balanced on my left knee as I sit on the couch drinking rum & coke with "Mad Men" paused on the TV (which is being fed from a game console that is connected without wires to the computer that the actual video file is stored on.) Cables running to external devices? Already history. The only cable running to the machine I'm typing this on is carrying power, and I can unplug that for 5-6 hours at a time. On the floor next to me is a keyboard about 5" wide, and a tiny mouse as well. Neither of them have cables. There's no cable connecting me to the internet. Heck, even my printer only has one cable, and again, that's carrying power. The only thing I still "need" a cable for on my "big" computer is the video display, and I expect Apple will invent a proprietary reason for that to go away within the next few years. I'm not trying to be a dick here. I'm just saying that if you actually step back and look at the history of computing over the past 30-40 years, it's really kind of amazing how little has changed in light of how much has changed. The way we use computers today just absolutely blows my mind, and I'm sure that part of the equation is going to continue to evolve in ways I can't even imagine. But the way computers actually work hasn't changed one bit since the Beatles played on the Ed Sullivan Show. I understand what you are saying thought, about not much changing. In some ways it's very similar to back in the day, but at the same time, things are so very different in pure computing power, what we can do with it, and how we use it day to day. I can just remember feeling on top of the world in 95 playing Flight Simulator, the thought that I would be able to play games 10 times as big and graphically intensive on a portable device that fits in my pocket, only 15 years down the road would have blown my mind. Just as technology 15 years from now will probably blow my mind. At least in a giddy, kid at Christmas kind of way. |

Wow. Forgot how many hours I spent playing that game. My friend and I both picked up the "Gold Edition" and then would play head to head by dialing directly into each other's computer. Seemed so revolutionary to actually be playing a computer game against someone all the way on the other side of town. |
Played lots of that, would always be so excited to get home from school and start building the perfect defensive base...only to have my buddy start nuking me.
Several times I was very close to hopping back in the car, driving my happy (upset?) ass across town and unleashing a mushroom cloud in his bedroom. |

Apple was probably the first one to market with a completely box-free, wire-free general purpose desktop computer: Attachment 240533 But they're not the only ones. Sony's entry into the market supports 3d and also functions as a regular television: Attachment 240534 Even the "budget" manufacturers are in the game today: Attachment 240535 No boxes, no wires. I mean, that's what you're talking about, right? They've got 'em at Best Buy. have a cell phone powerful enough to simply work as the muscle for a home setup, monitor, speakers, keyboard and mouse, all wirelessly, all with instant connection with proximity of the cell device. This is child's play, literally. When was the last time you saw a videogame controller with a wire on it? My six year old niece has never lived in a world where you have to be physically tethered to a box with wires. (And she kicks everyone's ass at Wii Tennis.) Of course, there are some practical minimum standards for how far down you can take things like the screen size and the user interface before it becomes unusable. It's quite likely that "computers" 10 years from now will have become segregated into even more distinct classes than they are now. Actually, it's started happening already. For casual use (social media, email, web browsing, and even gaming to some extent) I would posit that things like smartphones and tablets have already become the dominant expression for anyone under 20 years of age. They'll obviously continue to want a physical keyboard and a large display for things like writing term papers, but that's likely the extent of it. On the other hand, you've got professionals who probably will never embrace this technology. If you're an office worker who creates spreadsheets all day, or an engineer who designs mechanical parts with AutoCAD / Solidworks, or a video editor who works with film and television, you're probably not going to want to deviate from the box-on-a-desk form factor. You don't really need portability, and there's really no substitute for mechanical buttons and a large display in terms of user ergonomics for prolonged operation. In 2040, the accounting department is still going to have something that looks a hell of a lot like a 1970's vintage PC sitting on its desks. But under the lid, there's nothing going on there which the hacker crowd at MIT wasn't doing back in the early 60's on their PDP. It's just faster, cheaper, smaller, and with more of it. Attachment 240536 |

Strategy wasnt ever my thing, strategy games were so boring to me, but I often played Civilzation which was sorta like Empire. I played a lot of war flying games like A-10 Tank Killer. Then wolfenstien and doom came out, kinda ruined games. |

Yes, but computer growth has been very much exponential. 1977 to 1990 was pretty slow, starting at such a rudimentary point in computing. Then 1990-2000 was a pretty big leap. 2000 to 2010 was an even larger leap forward, multiple times more so than the previous decade.
If you're talking about exponential growth in terms of the number of computers in the world, then yeah, there's no question there. Even as a lifelong geek, I own way more "computers" today than I did even just ten years ago, although only one of them actually sits on a desk. And people who would never have bought a "computer" 15 or 20 years ago probably own several of them today without even realizing it. But in terms of technological development? We're in the weeds right now. From the late 1950s through the early 1970s, development was pretty boring. Transistors got faster, and computer manufacturers packed more and more of them into the box, but nothing fundamentally interesting took place in terms of the underlying technology. Then 1974 happened. The 8080 wasn't actually the first microprocessor. It wasn't even the second. But it was the first one that you could actually build a full-fledged computer out of. That was a paradigm-shifting event. Computers could suddenly be small and cheap! And thus, the PC as we know it today was born. That was huge. Between '74 and '77 there was a lot of progress in terms of user-interface. Things like keyboards and monitors became a de-facto standard, which was a big leap from the earliest UIs: http://oldcomputers.net/pics/imsai8080-left.jpg And that was huger than huge. It was fucking mind-blowing. After that, things kind of slowed down for a while. From 1977 until well into the 1980s, not much happened. Memory grew slowly, processor speeds ticked up incrementally. Massive growth in terms of the number of PCs that existed, but since manufacturers could barely build the machines fast enough to meet demand, there wasn't much need to improve them dramatically. When the Intel 80386 came out, that seemed to kick things into high gear. Suddenly, the Processor War was on, and it was more than just cranking up the frequency for a change. New techniques like memory management, prefetch, and even branch prediction started to be envisioned. And processors in general were starting to get cheap enough that they could be customized for specific applications within the computer. Bit blitters led to polygon shaders, and suddenly graphics got interesting. Rudimentary FM synthesis paved the way for wavetable-based audio, and suddenly computers sounded as good as they looked! And then, somewhere just after the turn of the century, it all sort of froze. Seems like these days the only real innovation is in figuring out how to do the same things we did 10 years ago but in a smaller form-factor and with lower power consumption. Nowadays, each successive generation of CPUs is actually slower than the last! And they're not doing anything radical in terms of architecture either- Intel figured out that it was far easier to just cut-and-paste the same design over and over and slap the label "multi core!" onto it, and the copycats followed suit. Right now, I fear that Moore's Law is in danger of repeal. On an unrelated note: Attachment 240532 Ha! I totally forgot about those! (I never owned one- I used scissors.) |
