Admittedly, I don't have any systems that average 950a. In my business, we tend to think in tens of kilovolts rather than hundreds of amps. But the end result, when something goes south, is the same.
And yeah, the checkbook (or the purchase order) is an amazingly useful repair tool. I consider myself hugely fortunate to work at a station that makes a ton of revenue, so when a critical system goes down, the only question I have to answer is "How quickly can we have this fixed?"
That having been said, I do have one employee in particular who seems to specialize in making a career out of what ought to be simple repairs. This microwave receive dish has been in the shop since LAST OCTOBER, because every single time he hits even the smallest little snag, it turns into an ordeal of Shakespearean proportions.
Mind you, most of my guys aren't slackers. As an example, the motorized polarization assembly on Dish 5 was hit by a bucket truck, and then struck by lightning, on consecutive says. To say that **** was fucked up is an understatement. And, mind you, the original manufacturer is long since out of business. Forget about buying replacement parts.
John absolutely knocked that repair out of the park. It took a grand total of two weeks to scavenge / manufacture all of the needed replacement parts, drill out a bunch of broken fasteners, and re-assemble the thing in like-new condition.
Is it ugly? Yeah, a little. We don't have a lathe or mill at the shop, so we're talking hacksaw / drill press / files. But you know what? It works.
My sister keeps sending me photos along the lines of this:
Yes, I get it. The Vizsla has prominent testes. I'm not sure why this needs to be an ongoing discussion. He's never going to be able to mate with the Chihuahua, no matter how much hilarity ensues.

I'm more impressed by his ability to shoot a "selfie".
