Why do medical offices always seem to have fish in them?

To keep people from staring at the clock, wondering how long they've been waiting. Dont know which is more ugly, the lighting, the wall color or the terrible tank set up. The whole package makes me sick.

many years ago i had a fish tank maintenance business. I was always amazed at how easily I would slip the customer a bill for $1,000 every month and they paid without a sound. people love colorful fish.

So a columnist is gloating that a conservative commentator died of the swine flu because she did not get inoculated against it? I personally don't know anyone who has been inoculated against the swine flu. Maybe some of you have. Sure, lots of people get vaccinated for the regular flu, but the people administering it are the first ones to tell you that it doesn't work against most strains of the regular flu. It only works against the particular strain that they think is going to be prevalent that year.

Pretty sad thing to gloat about.

And it says she contracted meningitis which is the likely cause of death. As far as I know there are no vaccinations against meningitis. But then again I'm not trying to prove some political point.
Flu shot will also lead to a milder case of the flu even if the strain isn't a perfect match for the calculations for that years vaccine.

Additionally, there are multiple vaccines for meningitis because meningitis is a presentation, not a causative organism. Neisseria meningititis has a vaccine known as the meningococcal vaccine. It's pretty much required for college students and cadets that are living in close quarters since it spreads rapidly. I don't believe there are any vaccines for viral meningitis, but they do have drugs that can treat it even though the mortality is pretty high by modern day standards.

Regarding your point about political points and vaccination. I think vaccination should be required except in certain circumstances (i.e. severe immunocompromise). There are plenty of idiotic people on all parts of the political spectrum that think their basic high school biology class qualifies them as an expert because they're wealthy. I guess that's one benefit for folks going into surgery... no one thinks they can google and youtube their way to doing things properly.

Actually, vaccination of the severely immunocompromised is common, and easily of greater importance to them than to those of us with healthy immune systems. (My sister is a good example- she's on some pretty hardcore immunosuppressant drugs as she's been having rejection issues with her lungs.)

What's crucial is that these people not be given live-virus vaccinations. An example here would be the sort of "flu shot" that is administered as a nasal spray. They do, however, benefit from conventional inactivated virus injection.

Still, when someone who has frequently and loudly denounced vaccinations dies of a virual infection, even if it isn't one that's commonly vaccinated against, it's still pretty damn funny.

Yes. Me knows. Thanks for specifying. I was just saying that it can be one reason to not get vaccines. The are some cases of compromise where even inactivated vaccines wouldnt do anything because the body wouldnt even be capable of mounting a response.

And yeah those things make the best memes.

Your comment reminds me of a stand up comedian's act that I've heard a few times. I'm not sure who or I'd give credit. The joke was about his mother (or wife?) hearing MTV scientist Jenny McCarthy saying vaccines caused autism in her son. ...it turned out he was just 1/2 Canadian. I just looked up her info and apparently the comedian didn't realize that child was born previous to her dating Jim Carrey.

Today, I learned that Jim Carrey is Canadian.

I also visited a new grocery store. Well, fairly old, but I'd never been there. Joong Boo Market. I was trying to find real mirin, and even Mariano's only had aji-mirin.

Anyway, Joong Boo is one of those places where I can only read the writing on about 1/4 of the merchandise (note to self: learn Korean and Mandarin), and was the most Caucasian guy in the place. I will definitely be going back. Despite being fairly small and cramped, they have a dumpling stand out front and a little Korean lunch counter inside. While there, I purchased a birthday cake for myself. Well, an 8 pack of them. Kohaku Mochi. Japanese rice cakes stuffed with bean jelly. Looking forward to that, as I haven't had Mochi in years.

While there, I saw this fish roaster:

(What a fish roaster!)

It appears to be identical to this fish roaster, but at less than 1/2 the price, and with no English instructions:
Amazon Amazon

The one on Amazon has high reviews, and it's gotten me to thinking... Maybe this is the solution to my grill problem?

Zojirushi is a legit kitchen electrics/onics manufacturer. Not sure what ungoogleable brand you've pictured there.

They had some Zojirushi products there. Sadly no Tatung that I could find.

This is the kind of store which is about 50% catering to the local Korean & Chinese community, and 50% restaurant supply. Rice comes in 40lb bags, and you can get 5 lb of peeled garlic for $12:
