The utility infrastructure in NYC is extremely old. Our steam system dates back to the 1880s, and the gas system is even older than that. So leaks aren't merely commonplace, they're a given. It's actually kind of surprising that we don't have major gas explosions and major steam explosions more frequently. Mochi is actually pretty slammin, you should give it a try. If you are not an adventurous shopper who frequents asian markets, you can usually find it in Trader Joe's frozen desserts section. Lower quality but a good intro I'd assume.
