I don't know what publication this illustration came from, but a copy of it is hanging on the wall in our shop at work:

Actually happened in my neighborhood lost power because of it. It through a big breaker in one of the boxes.
The lights went out, the UPSes started chirping, and the generator fired up and transferred automatically. Commonplace at broadcast stations in small hick towns on the outskirts of the distribution grid. After an hour of the generator being on, I started to get a little concerned. Went outside and saw that the lights were still on all around us. Looked at the pole outside, and saw the big breaker on one of the three phases tripped out at the primary. When the power company arrived and went up the pole, the lineman found the remains of a pair of bird feet welded to the top of the can. Nothing else was left, though upon closer inspection we did find some feathers on the ground. Probably a hawk. http://www.ambwallpapers.com/wp-cont...e-download.jpg Searching youtube produces a variety of interesting results on this topic; some animal, some human. They are not for the squeamish. This is one of my favorites. Don't click unless you want to see a man die: |

looks dumb. seriously. |
Why dumb? It's pretty clever seeing that large slabs of concrete take ages to cure and this is already premade. The only thing i'd do differently is use glue/concrete between the pieces to seal them.

(pictures of Rome) Fucking aqueducts... Look at 'em sitting there, all like "hey, look at me! I was built prior to the birth of Christ, and I'm still reliably carrying water across Italy without any external power input." I'll bet you a dollar they collapse under their own weight long before the sun goes supernova. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1456889022 |
