A lot of Spanish food makers are located in NYC (of which, for those who don't know, The Bronx, always with a capital "T" is one of five boroughs) and surrounding communities. Goya, for instance, is just across the river from here in Jersey City. I used to live within walking distance of their HQ when I was in Hoboken. There are nearly as many Puerto Ricans here as in Puerto Rico, which says something about Puerto Ricans in general, as the weather in both places sucks to the extreme at equal but opposite ends of the spectrum.

Materva, though, is pure old country stuff. It started out in Cuba, and moved to Miami after the revolution. It is the ANSI Standard Soft Drink in Puerto Rico and the Cuban communities of Florida, and is, without question, the best soda ever created. It is, to be fair, something of an acquired taste (it's quite bitter), but every time I pop open a can, I'm instantly transported back to my youth in Hato Rey, one of the more... interesting neighborhoods of Río Piedras in San Juan.
