Plumbing has been a nightmare on this ship.

A month ago, while still in Papenburg, they accidentally pressurized an open water line inside the ship and flooded 48 cabins, to the tune of around €1m in damage (and considerable delay.)

The picture above is just a small part of a ridiculously complex system of plumbing that no doubt gave some solidworks designer multiple orgasms as he was drawing it, and yet serves the simple purpose of pumping water from the pool system up into the top of the aft funnel in order to supply the AquaDuck. A single, straight section of pipe with one 90 degree bend would have sufficed, but that wouldn't have looked cool enough.



The Ducky Dinghy. When it's finished, there's a life-sized Donald Duck inside rowing it. You can see the cutout where his bottom mates with the assembly just above the life ring.

Disney UK Cruise Ship?

It's Fantasy, the fourth ship in the Disney Cruise Lines fleet. They're based in the US, however the ship is being constructed in Germany by Meyer Werft. She left the shipyard a few weeks ago and moved to Bremerhaven for final outfitting. On the 16th they depart for the US, arriving in New York on May 1 for the christening, then heading down to Port Canaveral in Florida to begin her normal Caribbean service.

The yard is really an amazing place. Their indoor drydock (which is the second-largest building in the world after Boeing's final-assembly plantin Seattle) houses two ships side-by-side, with a staging area between them, and they crank out about one of these per year.

No, they tend not to have broadcasting facilities on offshore oil platforms.

99% of my work is on land, mostly at traditional radio stations. We've done a couple of theaters, and this is my third cruise ship. I did some work on QE2 in '99, we outfitted the Disney Dream in late '10, and now the Fantasy.

I just learned that DCL apparently has a contract option for two more Dream-class ships with Meyer Werft, however while I have made joking references to the senior staff about how "we'll get it right with the third ship" (eg: inferring that we'll never get it right), I've heard no mention of immediate plans to exercise that option. I certainly hope that they do- these are by far the most fun jobs, even if it means being stuck at iced-in ports on the North Sea in winter.



I have no idea how the gap actually came to be. I know that all of the sheet-metal is robotically laser-cut on CNC beds, but I'm not certain about the plumbing.

My daughters are 4yrs and 2yrs, so I'm not speaking from experience of actually having a teenage daughter... yet.

However, I can tell you exactly what the problem there is. It's not the lack of respect that the kids has for her parents... it's the lack of respect she has for herself. Kids who do that to that extent are insecure and have serious self-esteem issues.

How about this... did you ever meet a 15yr-old black-belt? Let me tell you how little interest they have in Facebook tantrums. I have 2 buddies, not in the military, who's daughters have been taking martial arts since they were 5, but it's not their primary extra-cirricular (one is on the debate team). They go a few times a week for fun and practice, don't enter tournaments, and understand how their discipline is a life-skill, and not that it needs to be something that defines them (like so many other kids who only "do" one thing outside of school). They are the most impressive youngsters I've ever met. They look you in the eye, speak with confidence, and wear dresses. One of my buddies actually had to force her daughter to start carrying a cel-phone on her in case of emergencies because she thinks all that texting crap is lame. They are so awesome that it almost restores your faith in their generation... almost.

So I'm a ways away from being the Dad at the kitchen table cleaning guns when her date shows up to take her to the dance... but ---- like this video weighs on my mind. They are currently into standard pink girl crap, but the 4yr old is starting dance and soccer, and the 2yr old summersaults like a damn slinky.

My goal is that when when a new boyfriend shows up to date one of my kids, my talk to him is not about what I'll do to him if he gets out of line, it's what she'll do to him. But the real goal is that I'll never even need to have that talk. He'll never make that mistake. He'll respect her because she respects herself. I know I'm way ahead of myself, but I hope I'm not kidding myself.

I guess I'm lucky that both of my girls are going to be 6ft, blonde haired, blue-eyed Amazons. My 4yr old already has my ass, so she'll be especially popular with the brothers... and my 2yr old is on track for a career in beach volleyball.

Here's my oldest. Remember, I'm almost 6'5"... and I say she's 4, but she'll really be 4 in July. Something tells me I'm not going to have too many boyfriend troubles with them. Fine, fine... enough about how awesome my life is.
