Very hard to say no since I have a '00 housing at home to use if it gets munched. So please, go ahead. I actually logged on just to say "hey, what if you put a plate with bolt holes across the top, you could mount it then" but I guess you're ahead of me on that one. :-)

Oh yea! no problems there. I know on my car when you are at idle oil pressure sometimes gets down into the 10-15 range, and never goes above 40-50psi. We could use a little pressure boost, to get flow up at those low R.P.M. Not much excitement over full oil pump housings. I thought atleast someone would bite.

I'm very excited. I think it's a step up in price from the earlier ones, but the way I see it, 1) it's a more expensive car anyway, and 2) It's actually a lot better. Both of my pumps had some wear like that (though the 01 was much worse)... I would think facing the choice of "your pump will die soon anyway) they'd be all for it.

The only difference from these gears to the stock gears comes from slightly larger side to side play at .0055. We did that to eliminate the wear we were seeing that created the .009-.011 clearance issues we've seen. It just needed more oil cushion. If you think about it from a half clearance relation we added much less then the thickness of a human air to each running clearance per a side.

The concerns are with the type of metal, how little finishing was done on them prior to being shipped, the amount of damage to the gears even prior to being installed, the surfaces that weren't true and lastly was that I couldn't name a single person that is running them. With that being said, they're all setup inside an oil pump, but I'm on the fence as to use them or not.

That sounds all great, but I hear alot of concerns with no backing.
What micrometer finish is on the gears? These were final deburred/finished with with a 2 step vibratory finisher. RMS is very good.
Parallelness will not exceed .0005 in orthoganality to either side because they we're flat milled to body thickness.
Radial finished diameters were done with a Lathe. I would expect these values to be within .0005 of the target value, but within the trueness of the lathe @ the observed value which should be less then .0002in .
4140 is Rc 12-16 as foundry billet. Ultimate strength is 95,000 psi which exceeds every sintered material I know of by double. You do know distaloy sintered material (most common sintered material but like the others) Explicitly advertises the weight reduction of their parts because of the "swiss cheesedness" of their product right?

Iron-Based Foams, David Dunand Research Group, Northwestern University
You can put a sponge serving as a gear in your engine if you want. I'm not gunna stop you.

As I said several pages back, I'm no expert when it comes to metals or what should or shouldn't be part of these gears. For my untrained eyes they look just fine. When it comes to what I put in my engine, I listen to my builder, plain and simple. When he tells me he is concerned with the gears and starts asking questions, it makes me concerned. He came to this conclusion on his own without any input from myself. Hence why I asked if anyone is running them. All the theories, links, opinions from experts mean absolutely nothing to a guy like me, I believe in real world testing.
All my concerns can be eliminated if you show me real world use of Boundary Engineering Billet Oil Pump Gears in a high horsepower Miata.

I'll be honest with you, if you want real world testing if these oil pump gears are going to fail or not, your going to have to wait 3-5 years. I just dug through my files and sent emails out to people probing for information. I know I have people who have them installed because they've sent me messages, but I've since archived some of those old emails and or lost them. I get probably 30-40 emails a day, its a swamp out there.
I'm genuinely interested in the errors in the manufacturing of the gears. If there is a problem I want to know about it, but we checked these things really well and clearanced each in an actual oil pump housing before they were shipped. We used top of the line equipment for the manufacturing, and the guy doing the work has being doing it for 25 years he's very good. He also is accountable and within reach as its an American shop. He wouldn't dare turn out parts that would cause himself to be liable.

matttheniceguy has his motor together and running for only about 50km. Everything is functioning perfectly fine for him. He did opt to mill down the housing for a tighter fit, but it wasn't necessary.
As I get more emails I'll forward along results. I sent out a bunch of emails to people I know were close/finished so I should hear more back soon.

I did.
I haven't had time to work on a thousand other things on the car and really get it running so there is only about 50KM on the motor since putting it all together, but it is together, with your oil pump gears and a housing machined to give the 0.0033 clearance, and everything looks good.

Travis, thanks again for all the hard work, we all do appreciate it.
As Jay is, I am also concerned for similar reasons. So, any positive feedback that you make public will make me feel a lot better. I don't doubt the machining/material selection as from the little that I understand and have read about, it all seems adequate to say the least. Like Jay says, real world proof is key at this point. So please by all means keep it coming or even ask those users to contribute to this thread themselves. I am still saving up for Pistons and bearings in order to start my assembly, so I still have a little bit of time, but if no additional info is presented I will still use these gears.
