And btw, the only thing keeping me from doing it right (aka new, refreshed motor) is the fact that I don't live a half hour from my Grandpa's garage any more. We're not even allowed to change our oil in my apartment parking lot. I need to step it up to a townhouse with a garage.

I would love to have a garage. Luckily my landlords aren't *****. You can live vicariously through my motor rebuild and chill apartment complex.
Go with the functional crank repair. In the meantime, scout a way or a place to (legally) perform a more permanent engine fix/swap. Then your chi will be in balance.
