intake options?

intake options?
hear and read on the forums something about losing 4ft lbs over the high RPM range if you take your stock intake tube off???
if true......what if i just put a cone filter on the end of that pipe and delete everything after the end of the intake tube........(the airbox and snorkel)
any benefit???
or
if i just run a cold side intake???? where does the MAF go?????
i have an AEM filter can i just put that on the end of the factory intake air tube and get rid of the box and so forth and it work fine with increase in airflow???? (got a heatshield too by the way)

I would have to say that this would be a question that can probably be answered a little better by the gurus over on m.net in the naturally aspirated section. The smoother that you can get the air in there, the better I would say because that will keep the turbulent air flow down. Don't forget that you have a maf that still needs to be included in the equation.

Where does the turbo come into play, I think i'm missing something.
I might be mistaken but i'm pretty sure the only CAI gains were from the "macaroni" style intake. Sure you could rig up an adapter if needed to hook up the AEM filter, though I don't see you getting many gains from sucking warm air from the engine bay versus the intake box. Some sort of intake that actually pulled air from outside the engine bay would be the only benefit i could think of.

A cowl intake would benefit better than any other intake, at least from what I have seen. The Racing Beat was 2nd with the dyno charts I believe. Don't quote me though. Ask on M.net.. Then sort through the 40 replies to find the 2 factual.

R*Speed GAINED HP/TQ throughout the rpms with the monsterflow cone filter and tube. As well as the the J/R Cold Air Intake proved gains throughout.
I'm a strong disbeliever in the the whole resonator thing, the name gives it away, the ******* purpose is for SOUND DAMENPING, not airflow.
The miata is the first car I've ever dealt with where people are actually going out of their way to keep chambers and resonators on the intake tube, because one person 10 years ago said it increased TQ. Too many unproven myths on M.net...

hahahahaha true.....i have N/A setup right now and wont be able to afford FI for at least a yr or so......but for driveability and just better airflow......would it work if i took the stock tube and just put a AEM cone filter where the airbox is right now (delete airbox and the snorkel after the box) would that work is all im asking?

I have an used filter and adapter I could sell if interested.http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mazda...33205721QQrdZ1
It's just like this only it has a no name filter not a K&N.

summary - yes the airbox and snorkel are about half the restriction ... !!
