Default ID-ing a JDM NB 1.6 vs 1.8

So, I'm picking up a 2000 with a supposedly blown motor, and the sellers have one of those sweet, sweet 'JDM' engines that I can buy with it for a decent price. I kind of looked it over, but didn't look really hard - the exhaust shield had BP5A on it, but researching shows that was used on both the 1.6 and 1.8 engines. The shop they have the car and engine at told them it wouldn't work...I didn't look it over well because I thought they'd want back what they paid for it, and naturally they don't have the receipt either.

Does the CAS (or where it would be on the back of the head) location hold true for identifying the NB 1.6 as it does for the NA 1.6, with the CAS on the intake cam? Looking at pictures of other ones listed on ebay, that still appears to be the case, but I didn't know if anyone here had actual experience with one.

Another note, it's bolted to an auto trans, hopefully someone can shed some light on whether the 1.8s there were different when equipped with an auto. Or even if they were available to begin with.

Thanks!

Use a tape measure to get the overall length of the block.

If its an auto, you'll be down on C/R, which is fine for a boosted application. Just an FYI.
Post a pic, and you'll get a definitive answer fosho.

I took a look at it, and compared to 1.6 and 1.8 "JDM" engine pictures on various sites...it seems like the CAS location holds true, the engine I was looking at was a 1.6.

No matter, I ended up buying '99 to part out for the drivetrain three days later. Hate it when they multiply like that.
