I’ve toyed with the push button idea, but fear my vehicle getting stolen if someone finds the switches. On one hand, thieves aren’t always smart. On the other- if I got in a car with push button start, and it didn’t immediately fire up, I would start looking for switches near the driver.

I can attest to this.
Twenty-something years ago, I drove a '71 VW SuperBeetle cabriolet. That car was in mint condition. Clean, straight body- 100% original and in great shape.
One day, a thief decided that they wanted my cheap-*** Kmart radio. Did they cut the top like a civilized human being? Of course not, that would have been too easy to repair. Instead, they used what I assume to be a jumbo-size flat head screwdriver to pry the passenger side vent window out, using the pristine passenger door as leverage. Put a pretty serious dent in the door and fucked up the paint, in addition to bending the window frame.
I cannot even begin to convey the anger that I felt upon discovering this. Not because they'd stolen the radio, but because they'd chosen a particularly stupid and destructive path to get to it.
