I used John Day in Dallas (richardson TX). I picked him because he is respected in the SM class, he built the TDR red car motor which goes through incredible stress as the test car with over 100 track days at 280+whp from an mp62 in hainus and near disastrous conditions, he builds the motors for Keith Verges and all the turbo SM cars out here, he does all the engine work for Alamo autosports which is mostly DSM **** at 500+whp, and lots of locals. I don't know of any motor he's build shitting the bed, and everyone I spoke to has excellent things to say about him. I can get his # for you if you're interested.
He has my motor right now and only charging me $1200 for everything which is basically a slight overbore with new everything with the forged guts.

I'd steer clear of Racingmazda. I've heard a lot of horror stories about them taking 50% of the total cash for a motor, or in some cases 100% and then don't deliver. MarkP might have some input on this as he used to spend a lot of time at their shop babysitting his **** to make sure it got done. At one point they owed m.net members tens of thousands of dollars and/or parts. They pretty much dropped out of existance for the last year or two... I suspect they are laying low due to their bad reputation.

MS sucks because they don't sell it. Everyone I talked to about tuning my car refused because they seem to think MS is for cavemen...but they'll gladly sell motec or tec for $5k of course.
Is racingmazda even a machine shop? they probably farm out the work anyway.

no, not really, lol
well, the guy at racingmazda i talked to clearly stated that he runs 20-25psi on bone stock motors (even junkyard motors) and stock ignition all the time, on miatas...i was impressed....ok
told me a horror story about his buddy with a MX6 with MS, then proceeded to tell me that the AEM F/IC is far superior...i asked him what the F/IC did that MS didn't and his response "well it has full stand alone capability and direct plug in harness, and can tune fuel and spark, pretty much just like a EMU only way easier software for the user"
I had to go cause I......make something up

i will have the 2.0 stroker one day.....
yeah, i haven't heard good things about racingmazda either.
As for wanting a build motor, you could call Sunbelt (i think they're still around). But i think their cost is on par with FM.... but damn good stuff it is. They build a LOT of SM motors too.
