Fuel pump assembly question

Fuel pump assembly question
I swapped fuel pumps recently and when I pulled my pump assembly the beige plastic cover for the fuel gauge sending unit was missing. I realize fuel is not conductive but it bugs me to have two wires soldered to posts in this assembly uncovered in the tank. I checked in the tank and did not see the cover. The pump had been swapped from the 13 year old OEM one about two years ago so I am guessing it broke off when they did the swap to the DW300 pump. Obviously the car has been stable ever since, so I am thinking there is nothing to be worried about, but want to check with the powers that be here! So should I forget about it?
Also, a new gauge sending unit is ~$57.00 if it is still available it is about 1 hour of work to pull the pump on my car as I have a ton of dynamat to move off the tank cover and tray.
Thanks in advance for your insights.
