Default cutting open a head

I'm picking up a messed up 99-00 for cheap. The cam bearings are scored, most likely due to a thrust bearing failure. I figure it could be opened up so that best porting could be determined. Anyone have a recommendation as to who is up for the job?

Ben

"cutting" as in... cutting it in half to view port design?? Just go to a typical machine shop with a large vertical band saw...

Good ole bandsaw at a machine shop should make short work of it. Or a few cuts across each port so u can see the entire depth of the area, then do some cad work for later CNC porting work...

Corky bell cut apart some miata heads, atleast one of them anyway. When they were doing the research for their coolant reroute for the H-EX car he was looking for messed up cheap heads to do that. He might be able to supply better pictures for you of what has already been done, if anything actually took place.

no it's a different head
leatherface's is worth saving

this head is salvagable too, but it would take a couple hundred worth of work

You don't remember which is which in that picture? Theres a HUGE difference. I'd guess the bottom is 99 judging by intake runner angle. I read somewhere the 94-97 is 23* angle and the 99 is supposed to be like 54 or 56*

the bottom is the '99 head. Check out the raised port, and "short side radius" just to start.

solomiata.com has the pics and info. HTH
