So true --
YouTube - Crash Test 2005 - 2008 Audi A6 (Side Impact) IIHS

Go to 28 sec and you get a feel for just how violent a side impact is. This car is considered good rating, too. Miata side impact probably sucks in comparison... The SFI foam won't do ****, either, to a bare head. That stuff is super hard and used to soften a blow with a helmet on.

rappadan -- Were you wearing that helmet set in your passenger seat when the Lexus hit you? Did you get hit on the street or in some race event?

It was a drifting event if I remember correctly. Solidbp, a front hoop and door bars still wouldn't make that anything but a stiffening device. It'd be a weird accident, but something could crush you between the front and rear hoop. If you hve a cage, you shouldn't ever be driving the car without a helmet on. Just like you shouldn't be using a harness without a proper seat, blah, blah, blah.

"The SFI foam won't do ****, either, to a bare head. That stuff is super hard and used to soften a blow with a helmet on. "

allthough you are somewhat correct, you are wrong on one critical thing. the foam is not to hard it is to soft. ever seen the inside of a helmet? it's made from EPS. Expanded Poly Styrene. which is more dense than SFI foam pads. the problem isn't the foam it's the bar behind it. the foam simply helps to disipate some energy from destroying the helmet shell. all in all though it's still not a good idea to run a full cage without a helmet, but it is a free country and natural selection is natures way.
