Default 6 speed tranny

ok. never really considered this before, but i need to either get a new tranny or rebuild the one i have. i tried searching on the forum and i can't find anything about swapping the stock 5spd for the 6spd out of a newer mx5. i have a 1995 and the tranny i was looking at was a 2000 i believe. does anyone know anything about swapping this out? is it possible? thanks for any help you guys can give!

I believe it's a strait swap, you'll just need a shift **** w/ a 6 on it I'm sure someone else will post up to confirm though.

I just did a swap (or, in fact, Bruce (Olderguy) did one for me). Bruce, you want to to share your expereince?

By the way, if you want a brand new (not rebulit) 5-speed tranny, i have one in the for sale section for very cheap!!

You need the transmission mounting plate and shifter that come with it, as both are unique to the 6 speed. Also, you will only use two of the 3 5-speed starter bolts when you bolt it up. It's perfectly fine though.

It's a straight swap. You'll need the 6 speed shifter.

I've read the motor plate and starter was transmission specific, but my 5 speed stuff worked just fine.

The only thing you REALLY need is the 6 speed. The starter needs to be replaced if you want it held on by more than two bolts and the bracket(which some think is more than enough) and to do that, you need the 6 speed plate between the engine and transmission.

In all, the hardest part of the swap is the starter and the **** brackets and lines and small area to work in. But this is the same on any clutch job.

The wiring needs to be modified slightly for the back up switch also, but no biggy.

So far as the six speed shifter, it IS different, but should be part of the 6 speed package you buy.

lol, Sam rethought out the long post?

You actually had some misinformation there. 6th in the 6 spd is SHORTER then 5th in the 5spd. Aka 6 spd sucks when it comes to top speed runs.

Yup, I guess I'm getting softer. He gets the ******* fire-hose next time though.

.814 to .843... close, but you're right... sucks even more. They try to make up for it with the shorter final drive but the 4.1/5spd is still taller than the 3.9/6spd.

Any 6 speed swap should be accompanied by a 3.63 R&P swap. I've been loving it for the last few weeks. First is usable again and it no longer takes two shifts to get to 60mph.

This is a technical Miata forum. It is one of those places where things are spelled out properly by individuals with a decent education and reasonable degree of automotive knowledge. What you are looking for is a "hold my hand while I pee" forum. Please search out clubroadster.net and a solid English curriculum.

It's a shame you did not know that MiataTurbo.net has the most *******-per-capita of any Miata forum on the internet.

Although its an even BIGGER shame you did not figure out that MiataTurbo.net also has more intelligent-fellows-per-capita than most other Miata forums, as well.

You take the good with the bad, and as always - feel free to be a douche, this is the internet and that is what it is here for.

The first hit is the interchange guide...
http://members.aol.com/solomiata/Drivetrain.html

So now that that's out of the way, did you know that the Miata is the second most purchased car in the US by gay men behind the BMW 3-series? If you can handle that stigma, then you can probably find a way to suppress the feelings caused when somebody tells you to put a little effort in to finding things out on your own... unless you really are a flaming homosexual. If that was the case then I could understand your sensitivity and hurt feelings.

Being hard on NOOBs weeds out the turds who will never have anything constructive to offer... those guys get "offended" and leave. Other forums tolerate turds straight off the bat... and consequently a lot of threads are full of misinformation and spam. This forum is different. People with a sense of humor enough to know when they're being subjected to some initiation "hazing" stick around, earn some respect, and strengthen the knowledge base.
