My buddy had the biggest smile and he was saying "No ******* Way.. you just hung with a M3!" "I wish I had my video camera for that"
Truthfully it was all I had to stay with him but I know he was doing the same.
I wonder what the conversation was when he got to work.
Driver "Hey man there was this little red convertible that was walking all over the *** of my M3"
Buddy helping him serch pictures on the internet. "Is this it?"
Driver "Yea that is it!"
Buddy "Its a ******* Miata! You got walked by a Miata?!?"
Driver "**** you"
Buddy "Muahahaaahaahahaaaa!!!!!!"

Unless he was topping 5th gear out when the BMW began to pull away, no he doesn't need taller gears. In fact, the top of the rpm range should be his most powerful area. The BMW pulled away IMO because of A.) more power - the higher the speeds, the more raw power is needed to increase speed and vehicle weight matters less and less, so the lower powered miata's better power to weight ratio matters less and less when the speed gets high enough and B.) aerodynamics - the miata is aerodynamically challenged. The BMW, while having a bulky silhouette, has a ton of aerodynamic developments that miatas do not. This matter more and more the higher the speed.

BTW. BMW Drive train loss is huge. They are rated at 414 bps and estimating a 25% power loss from drive train, they are only producing 310 WHP at roughly 3400 lbs. A turbo miata that is maybe 250 whp at 2200 lbs is faster PW ratio wise already. Then little stuff like aero dynamics and gearing is not that huge of an issue, so it is easily possible to beat a e90 or e92 M3.
BTW my miata is faster then my E46 M3 by far.

Good to know....I was side by side with one today for about a 1/2 mile on the highway but he didn't wanna play. I did'nt wanna do a ricer fly by so I just sat there side by side, and nuthin. Afterwards I pulled ahead and he slowed things WAY up because in a blink of an eye I could barely see him in my rearview. Not sure if he heard my bov, saw the Miataturbo.net stickers, or was just nervous about losing with his lady friend in the car...I was ready to give it a whirl even though I had my girlfriend, dog, and about 30lbs of "picnic" **** n tools in the trunk....My gf asked if I thought I would win and I said naw...but if I lost it would'nt be by much and you could buy like 5 miatas for the price of the M. Despite this, I love those cars, ******* sexy!

Hmm I "raced" another m3 today. Again, it was a last generation one. Just from a stoplight to about 85. I've turned my boost down to about 8psi and now I could barely crawl away towards 'em. He was in front and I saw a little puff of soot when he hit high RPMs. It's about 90 here today-- was his car just running rich from ECU trim due to the temperature? His car sounded factory so I don't think a straight pipe was involved.
