Upgrade the engine to suite the TD04-13t
Hi,
Im looking to upgrade the engine to suite the TD04-13t 's best potential.
For those of you who run the TD04-13t Turbo on the mx-5 1.8L. What is your maximum boost, bhp, torque numbers?
This is because i'm having to rebuild my engine after I bent the rods on a stuck waste-gate.
I'm looking at upgraded oil pump, rods, bearings and rings. This will be done by a renowned engine shop.
After that upgrade, the TD04-13t would be my limit if I am looking for more power.
So any comments to make the 1.8 VVT love the TD04 more?
I have not included pistons in this list, if I max out the TD04 turbo will I be destroying the stock pistons? Experiences?
See my hardware list on what I already have;

If the original pistons are good, I would use them. The TD04 can make lots of boost mid-range (you witnessed that), but unless you want that kind of peaky torque curve, there is no reason to do that.
I am running 16psi to about 3500, then backing to 15 from 4 - 5K, then rising back to 16 until the turbo runs out of air at about 6500. By that, I mean, cannot hold boost past about 6300. I falls off to around 15 at red line. Torque is falling off pretty fast there as well.
So, I'm not sure you even need the oil pump. There is no need to raise the red line.
There have been some recent TD04 dyno posts. Possibly you can find some. Realistic peak WHP is 230 - 240.
Mid-range torque can be high.
Look at the compressor map. It tells (2) stories. At mid flow rates (power), it can supply 2.8 pressure ratio, or 26 psi boost. But the maximum flow is a pretty hard wall, regardless of boost, once it is over 2.0 PR, or 15 psi.
Here is Karter74's dyno at 15psi waste gate. You may be able to hold up the torque a little bit, maybe to 6300 RPM, then it will fall off, no matter what you try to do.
My VD results are similar, with targets of 16psi up to about 3500, then down to 15psi though the natural max torque area, then back to 16psi around 5K. In hot weather, cannot always be attained, or at least not quickly enough. In cold weather, it can, and the torque is higher.
I know nothing about VVT. I understand that it helps mid-range torque. Something you can have with TD04 and EBC anyway.

Did you already measure your bores? If you have too much wear on your bores you need oversized pistons any way. At that point you could either search for another block or go with forged pistons.

Thanks for the replies lots of info! I am dropping the oil pump. 500,- saved. I have a visit to the engine shop on the 6th will let you guys know the state of the block after.
