If you haven't heard about what happened to my built motor see HERE . I got my block back from the machine shop got new bearings, pistons and rings. Supertech pistons and wiesco rings. I am attempting to reassemble the block myself. My first question is, do I use supertech's piston ring chart or wiesco's chart? Any other tips or recommendations please feel free to post.
Some unsolicited life advice. Pull the brass galley plugs and clean out all your galleys if you didn't already. Will need new plugs to replace them. Bit hard to tell from the pic but that plug looks old. I pull the restrictor out of the top of the block and replace that too so you can clean behind it. Pretty normal to have a ton of debris in there after any machine work. Shops will tell you they've "cleaned the block". I rarely take anyone's word for stuff like this.
So back to rings. I was gonna go with .017 and .018, problem is that my lower rings are already .021 and .022. did I get a bad set of rings? I had to file the top rings to achieve the .017 so no problem there. Lower rings are much larger. Should I just go with .019 for top or?
What would be the max ring gap I could run without excessive blow by and compression loss? It's looks like I'm going to have to run .019-.020 upper rings and .022-.024 lower rings.
I can tell you that I'm planning to try and hit 400hp. On Wiseco Rings and Supertech pistons, I'm at .019 (1st), .023 (2nd), .017 (oil rings). I'm happy with my decision so far. But I don't plan on using this for track (much). Certainly not at 400hp.
I'd go about 1mil less than me if I were you. Just make sure you are confident you can get perfectly crisp and square ring gaps. Don't be afraid to throw out a set if you screw up.
I think my cylinder bores are slightly too large for 83.5 mm pistons. when I drop the lower rings in to measure initial gap they are already too large at .024-.025. So I think I need to have the block board for 84 mm pistons and rings. Thoughts?
