I checked the crank sensor, and the wiring for the sensor was led up right behind a pulley that it has probavly been rubbing on since the car was new, the covering and one of the wires was worn through, I believe it would be the ground wire, it was a solid black wire, which would explain why it was intermittent.
Thanks for your suggestions and info, hopefully my problem is solved. Now to go for a nice long test drive!

that sucks. but at least the crank sensor and wiring isn't hard to get to. every time I look at the little bent tab that is supposed to hold those wires away from the pulleys I wonder about how reliable it is.
