Miata NA 1990 runs does not go in gear
Hi! Was hoping I can get some help,
just took the engine out and put it back in recently replacing the clutch. (Yes its in correct not backwards) went ahead started the car and the car wont go into gear at all. (Only goes in gear when car is off) It jolts forward when I turn it on and have it in gear prior but thats as far as it goes. I replaced the master and slave cylinder and got a new braided line. We adjusted the pedal as well and if it helps the clutch is a stage 3. Im just confused on what’s happening any thoughts? Would help a bunch! Thanks.

Did you replace the pilot bearing?
Sounds like either the pressure plate itself is not releasing or the input shaft for the transmission is locked to the flywheel via a damaged pilot bearing.
Does the clutch pedal feel normal?
Other possibilities are:
Broken clutch fork (for throw out bearing).
Bad pivot for the fork.
These two would affect pedal feel.
Missing dowel pin between trans and engine block. This might jam the pilot bearing. There are ALWAYS two of these and they usually stay stuck in the block.
These are on the bottom bolts that thread into the block itself.
Clutch disc installed backwards. (You already mentioned this).

Also the clutch does not feel normal, its soft from mid up and hard towards the bottom.
Thank you for the recommendations will be checking these things tomorrow when we get the trans out.

UPDATE: we had asked our friend if he had any clue and he had recommended not pushing the clutch in all the way and the car running was able to go in gear! Just have to adjust the pedal to catch at the right spot
