It was already sick (down on compression 8% in one cylinder) prior to the event. Just got worse and worse during. Massive blowby, too. Post event compression test showed down 25% in that cylinder and down 10% in adjacent one. We had originally planned to run a different motor (fresh pro built shortblock) but that one had an oil leak which we did not have time to fix (turned out to be through the girdle) |

Just had a thought, why not use the 1.6 miata flywheel and clutch design for this? It would WAY simply the flywheel that you guys have to have custom made. Even a stock k24 is going to be a lot of engine for the stock 1.8 clutch to handle so you're already into having to use aftermarket clutches. Might as well save weight and MOI by using the 1.6 stuff and make the flywheel easier to boot.

1) Believe it or not, manufacturing cost was identical between the 1.6 and 1.8 style, due to the size of the piece of aluminum used to make the flywheel. 2) We recommend using a full 1.8 drivetrain to handle the additional torque of the K series, and most customers are using 1.8 cars anyway. Many already own an aftermarket 1.8 clutch so this helps keep their cost down. 3) we like the clutch options for the 1.8L better. Take the Exedy stage 2 clutch for example, which is perfect for a K24. the 1.6 stage 2 is only rated for 152wtq, but the 1.8 is good for 208wtq - perfect for NA K setups. |

The racers who arent running twin disks or anything else with a non-standard flywheel seem to favor the 1.6 flywheel even if they're making big boy horsepower like bundy. Even my 300ftlb rated clutch has a lighter pedal than I would prefer in a racecar its nice on the street though. |
