Default FM big spark alternatives?

FM seems to be discontinuing their LS coil setup which also works with the Hydra.
I am asking for suggestions as I was hoping for something that is a bolt on kit or close to it.

Current
2004 MSM with Forged internals, Hydra nemesis, 1000cc injectors, GT2560, Begi DP and MSM catback. 260whp 250wtq

Upgrade
GTX 2860 vs 2867, Head ported polished and +1 valves, Skunk 2 intake with spacer, FM stage 3 cooling, FM Oil cooler kit, FM DP and 3inch exhaust Plus an ignition option...
Goal is 350+ whp

For track day and daily driving use.

If you are able to adjust your dwell table on your hydra, you could go with the FlowForce Ls coil kit. As far as I am aware, purchased as is, it is direct plug and play with na/nb miata that isn't a 90/93.

It is plug and play for wasted spark ignition. If you go through the effort of adding more outputs from your hydra, if it even offers that feature, then you can also go to fully sequential ignition.

Yup Yup. Probably part of the reason why FM doesn't sell much of the big spark kit. But, the Flow Force kit does not include coils. You need to source those on your own.

Buy used ones at the junkyard or off ebay, they come in rails of 4. The aftermarket, as usual, is super hit-or-miss...

They offer both BYO coil kit and complete plug and play kits. Just bought their complete kit recently. Couldn't be happier with it.

Just do Toyota COPs , I did a home made version of FMs Big Spark kit and wish I’d just done cops now. Getting custom plug wires is a pain and expensive here . I store my car for 3-4 months every winter and if I don’t remove the plug wires , invariably some critter decides they look appetizing and I get to buy new ones in the spring. Custom plug wires seem to be getting harder to get too as most modern cars have gone to COPs. Fredb

I am making 373whp on stock NB1 coils and NGK wires with no missfire. I use a new NGK coilpack ( not OEM ) and its been perfect. Unsure why people think stock coils cant do these things. I run .022" gap with Ruthenium NGK plugs or Iridium and never an issue.

Curious what your dwell is? I think I could have run 5.5ms dwell on my stock coils but I didn't realize it at the time, my base tune had 2.9 or something.

I can check my map, off hand I'm not sure. I'll report back with answers lol

Between 5.08 and 4.28 depending on voltage 13v up to 14v

All the aftermarket LS coils I have tried from parts stores have sucked *****. I only use OEM off vehicles at a junk yard.

FM cost for the full kit was expensive due to them using NEW OEM coils. They are expensive straight from GM. The brackets were a reasonable price when I purchased a set years ago. The wires they sell are Magnacore with a lifetime warranty. You can order them straight from Magancore if you want. Sadfab can also hook you up with some wires if you need them.

If I am not mistaken the FM coil bracket didn't work on VVT engines.

I have LS coils that I think were purchased new from Napa. So far so good.

The MSM is non-VVT.FM offered tow options VVT/non.Unfortunately FM is selling the kits without the coils at this time. The price is rather high. Close out.

I am not an expert and I’m just repeating what I’ve been told. My understanding is the stock coils can absolutely handle it but they’re going to wear out fast. I’m planning on running 20+ psi like you are which is why I think I need them.

There is a legitimate problem with some of the production coils that Mazda shipped on the 99 and early 2000 NBs, you can find the OG and superseded PNs on m.net. The ignitors in someof the early coils seem to have broken down and gotten flaky fairly quickly and that causes a light spark and intermittent misfire at high RPM that doesn't generate a CEL. Add to this the tendency for the NB1 ECU to run rich in open loop and this becomes especially bad for the California Emissions spec NB1s with the 2 cat converters. Both CA and Fed spec have a cast iron manifold but the CA spec one got a smaller "light off" cat up next to the head attached to the iron boat anchor manifold. This smaller cat is supposed to come up to temp faster and therefore help cut cold start emissions but once the coil started to let go the precat would self immolate and break into chunks, then deposit itself in the inlet of the second cat. There was some discussion years ago about a class action lawsuit against Mazda because no recall was performed for the coil packs, but at least Mazda was forced to replace the precats under emissions equipment warranties, and most of the time they replaced the coils as well. Good thing too because the CA approved precats used to be about $1700 from the dealer, or $800 if you bought one from Magnaflow. Now that there is some competition in that space, the CA Certified Magnaflow one is down to $677 and you can get an OE replacement one from an online Mazda parts house for under $500 bucks (its probably a reboxed Magnaflow)

Short story long, if you push one of the "bad" stock 99/00 coils you tend to get spark break up and misfire, so the reputation is well deserved. The later production 00 NB1 packs are fine, I myself made over 300HP on a stock, as delivered from Mazda, 19 year old NB1 coil, and I've got 2 more tested good ones in the garage that I keep as spares. As @andyfloyd pointed out, a new production NGK made NB1 coil pack is also a solid performer. If you want to run a wider gap, the Toyota COPs or any of the flavors of LS coils are also a solid choice.

The last NGK coils I purchased (2 years back) had a "Hanshin" brand mark exactly like the Hanshin brand mark on the original ones I removed from the car (04MSM).
In my book the NGK coils ARE OEM just at 40% off...

They do this crap with AC compressors al the time.
Often the OEM compressor is Calsonic for Mazda and expensive at the dealer.
You purchase a Denso brand for 50% less and when you unbox it it says Calsonic on the compressor...

Japanese OEM suppliers seem to be in bed with each other.

Yep, my ngk coil pack I bought had hanshin and ngk logos on it. Kinda funny and I think you're right about the companies being in bed, but hey all I know is my "ngk" coil pack is working great @ 373whp and no missfires at all. Can't complain.
