Default 03 VVT Motor Mated to 94 ECU

Hey guys,

Kind of a technical question inspired by this thread.

Does anyone have dyno sheets or any other kind of hard evidence that the stock '94 ECU will run the '03 VVT motor "terribly"? I've seen some anecdotal evidence from both sides, so I'm pretty conflicted on this. I feel like I've read about quite a few people running the VVT motor with the factory ECU and just bypassing the VVT by putting the NA CAS into the back of the head.

I'm finishing up this exact swap with VVTuner as a piggyback to support the VVT function, and I'm wondering if the factory ECU will truly cause the engine to run lean. Based on what I know, this is kind of scary to me and don't want to risk the engine. However, if I can get away with the factory ECU, I'm sure as hell going to. I honestly can't justify the money and time required to get this car running on Megasquirt or something.

Are there any other reasons NOT to use a stock ECU? If it can actually be justified, I'll look into budgeting for an MS3, WB02, and a laptop so I can try and understand why everyone on MTNet is losing their minds about.

Thanks guys
