The problem is the fact that his first gear is too low. I would like to see someone with some drag race skills try launching the car in 2nd with a 6 speed. I have a hunch it will work better.

I mean, i was dead hooking with 4.10's and a 5 speed with a 195 tire.
I believe that more time spent between gears will lower not only trap speeds but ET by two tenths or so. I have the ability to flatshift, but have been to afraid with the 5 speed and more power. Maybe this is something he can take advantage of.

Actually it is not. The correct gearing would put you near redline in the gear that is 1:1. He has a 6 speed, so he should be near the top of 5th to get the best ET.
