The best run of the night, that 13.5, was actually my first run, when I didn’t launch, just took off like a slightly aggressive grandma, shifted slowly, banged off the limiter in 4th for a bit, and decided to try 5th finally. Thought for sure I’d be in the 12s by the end of the night.
Bringing it up from the dead, again, cause I went drag racing, again. It was a long, hot day at work, followed by heat soaking the crap out of the car during the hour long drive to the strip. Averaged 25mph. Got there and found out, new for 2024, my aftermarket turbo apparently required a fire jacket now, which they lent me. I was quite sweaty by the end of the night.
Updates since last time: a bit more power (ok 80hp more), better tires (225 CR-S), and SM's awesome and sadly discontinued poly/bronze bushing kit.
First pass was another grandma run, 13.6. 2nd run I tried to be more aggressive and spun, missed the 4-5 shift, ran a 14.2. Then a couple passes messing with launch RPM, burnouts, and more missed shifts. Finally with a burnout, launch control as soon as the 2nd stage light goes on, no miss shifts, and I managed the 13.0, then backed it up with my best run of the night, 12.971. While the 12.9 run was altogether smoother, the biggest difference was flat foot shifting 3-4.
I'm really happy with the gearing as it sits, so I won't be changing it, but I think that's the biggest issue as the car sits. It's a 3.9/6-speed. I launch in 2nd and having to do a 2-3 and 4-5 shift during the run is tough.
Couple more launch RPMs and I think there's a ~12.5-6 in the car as it sits. Bench racing FTW.
Looks like a fun time sweating it out in the fire jacket 12.5 is easily attainable, judging by your trap speeds. Not really sure about launching in 2nd tho. If you really like 2nd, maybe just short 1st a bit. I think your gearing is fine, you can stay in your 1:1 gear past 114 so you're good. A 5k rpm launch in 1st with warmed tires should get you a 12.6, no problem, better if FFS is a real advantage.
Solid improvement! I’ve been considering taking my car out to our strip recently and this is only furthering my interest haha.
Are you running boots by gear in your car? Aside from wheelspin on the launch, I’d imagine spinning ‘em in second is rather easy too with street tires at 330whp.
114mph trap is no joke. Nice runs! Road racing cars usually struggle at drag racing in my experience unless you change the setup for that purpose. I'd say that's a huge win.
Yes, boost by gear. I haven't spent the time to setup closed loop boost control, but I trim 100% duty cycle in 1st and 40% in 2nd. Considering my max duty is 60%, 2nd is pretty much wastegate too.
Eventually I'll download the internal datalogs and see what kind of boost I'm seeing on LC.
It spins briefly in 2nd before bogging a touch, I think either decreasing the wastegate DC trim or upping the launch RPM is all it needs.
Here's a shitty video I took of my friend making a pass. He didn't burnout as aggressively as I was, but you can hear on the launch the tires do squeal a little bit, but then they catch and it bogs. Hence the need for a bit more launch RPM or boost. Or both.
