Thoughts on Broke n Boosted? Budget Turbo Series
#90
Not focussing on the cheap part of his talking (because I suppose this is what get him views on YT and search engines), but on the DIY part where he is pushing people that probably won't be confident enough to try by themselves.
Also note that into this age, lots of people prefer to have an entertainer into a video than reading a forum even if there are detailled pictures.
I can understand that the old guard could be upset by the young knight but he is not doing bad to the cause imo, he's just doing things differently that you would I guess.

The thing is he isn't doing anything new or really different. Everything he is doing is how we would turbo a miata in 95-05ish. The different way he is doing it can be very inefficient and can cause you to blow you motor if you don't do it perfect. I have seen plenty of blown motors of people who threw on a FMU and didn't properly retard timing. With how check Megasquirts can be done you really should not skip out on one, unless you have a very specific reason to not use one. IE you are building a lemons car and know exactly what you need to do to make the FMU work perfectly. It is knowledge that you gain from reading a ton, not something you would pick up from 5-10 minute youtube videos.

I know that for sure, I previously leave a honda forum because of a guy that was bragging that FMU was far superior to ecu mapping. His point was that it was used since decades around the world and have good result.
He had extended knowledge on building bottom end for boost application, but his fueling and advance management was from stone age : what a waiste... Those engine was so strong that even with his shitty "management" they would still run and he couldn't matter more.
As said in my welcome message I came here to learn a bit more (scratching the surface) because I need to know the thing in depth before starting doing it. I read everything, everywhere, watch YT videos, sort the good and the bad.
I guess in anything there are a few to take, in Greg's case I certainly didn't take the FMU !

Just to clear the record, I'm aware I'm not doing anything "new", more just doing a cheaper version of a cheap turbo build style that's been around since I was driving a Cozy Coupe. I just wanted to offer it in a different form of media to get more information out there. That's another reason I feature plenty of other content besides the budget build. Are there things I would do different now? For sure, and I'll be doing a video about that as well. Some people don't understand that this build is a learning experience for me as well, not a "This is how you build a turbo Miata cheap and there's no other way" series. I'm glad when people take what I show them and come up with a better way of doing it. After putting some miles on the car I'm sure I'll discover firsthand what shortcomings it has. P.S. Love it or hate it, thanks for watching!
