Default TD04 Turbo DIY Build

I recently got a TD04 turbo for my NB miata and was looking around for a manifold that would fit with the turbo but I can not find one. Can anyone help me find a turbo manifold that will fit the 1.8?

Kraken. You will need to contact him (Facebook maybe). Search. He may not have it listed but he supplies them. I presume you mean the TD04 with triangle inlet flange with 3 screws.

Go to meet and greet and tell us about you, your car, and your plans for it.

Another vote for Kraken. I have a MK1 NA6 to TD04 (subaru flange) set up and it is a work of art, on top of spooling and working super well. Zero complaints over 2.5 years and about 12k miles. Put it on, tightened everything up and have done nothing but tuning and oil changes to the car since.

There is a company that makes a t3 to td04 adapter plate. I think its used to run subaru turbos on Saabs. I have one on my ebay t3 manifold. It seats the turbo a little high but is working for me. I will try and find the link later and post. Just an alternative to kraken. I know I didn’t feel like paying for shipping from across the pond.

Hijacking this, but what is the approved way of running an oil line to the turbo? I don't know much about all the kinds of pipe/tube threads, but I have a BSTP to 1/8 NPT adapter to put by the oil pressure sender and I found somewhere that 41in long should do to get to the turbo, does the TD04 use banjo bolts? Does anyone make such thing or I'd have to stack a bunch of adapters?

No worries hijacking. The original poster went dark, so this is your thread now.

I did the un-thinkable and used the port at the back of the head and ran a short line to the turbo. Good after 30K miles.

At the turbo: a M10 x 1,5 thread Adaptor fitting that uses a crush washer to seal. Other end is -3AN or -4AN as needed. I suggest -4AN. The fitting has a built-in 1.5mm diameter hold for oil flow restriction. You could use banjo, but I don't know how you will get the restriction. I would use the adaptor I did. Like this one, Maybe contact Kinugawa EDIT: Dang, mine was $9.00.

Pics in Build Thread: before and after hard lines.

The head uses a -4AN to 1/8" BSPT which requires no crush washer for sealing. Only dope.

Other people will have to discuss length of -4AN to get you to the old sender.

Does your block have the ports beneath the exhaust manifold? That may be early 1.8's only; IDK.

Ah perfect. I was looking at your build thread because I'm pretty much putting the same exact thing together. DIY Mani, Td04 of a Subaru, DIY downpipe. I can't do the machining to Vband so I got a 3 bolt flange to weld to the mani, hopefully I won't warp the hell out of it.
I had seen an old thread about the oil line coming from the head where an Australian guy was saying it worked but no one believed him, I like to hear it works for you because I like that 10x more than running a line behind the engine and having to Tee things.

Anyway, since I have your attention, does your downpipe have two pipes instead of one big one? Do they merge at some point? I couldn't see pics of it in the early posts of your thread, sorry if I missed them.

Thanks!

Yes. It is a segregated downpipe. An old BEGI unit we modified to fit our install. Post 90 of build thread has a picture of it. It originally had both slip fits, but we welded the 2" and just let the waste gate pipe slip for differential expansion.

I cannot say why, but my TD04 can hold 15psi to red line. Maybe the segregated downpipe, maybe the 3" exhaust. Maybe just that my exhaust really sucks so I have high pressure everywhere. But I don't think it's that.

Are you still running a 1.6, or do you have a swap?

Here is a recent pull with VD:

how did you manage to make so much power off of such a little turbo?

I think from a 2005 WRX. TD04L-13T.

It was a little cool that day. 250 WHP is the common high numbers. See My inspiration and he has an NA head and 2.5" exhaust.

This is not a real dyno. But I think it is pretty close. None of the old timers have called BS on me.

@Caden Russell Go to the Meet and Greet and tell us about your car and your plans. And post up some pictures.

I am making 200 to the wheels at 10psi on a restrictive exhaust and 1.6 with the same turbo. Verified to be close by running 101mph in the 1/4mi. 245whp out of a 1.8 with better everything at 15psi seems totally doable.

These are old VD runs and I have refined the tune a bit since then.
