Total quantity in the crankcase? Same as stock. Figure an extra ounce or two maybe to fill up the oil feed line to the turbo, but after and oil change I just fill the crankcase until the level reaches the "full" mark on the dipstick.

WTF???? The book says 3.6qts. That always brings me perfectly to the full line. Do 1.8's have different quantities? Why does everybody seem to be putting in substantially more than the owners manual specifies?
And as stated:
The turbo makes absolutely no difference in the amount of oil you put in.

I've always run mine in the middle between the add oil and "F" line; except when my idiot former son-in-law "mechanic" couldn't see the clean oil on the dipstick and overfilled it.
I try not to fill it too much to minimize frothing. About 3.5 qts on an oil and filter change on a 1.6 does it nicely.

The part that gets me is that the manual says 3.6qt for a 1.6... and guys are dumping in from 1/2Quart to a full Quart extra regardless of motor to get full.
That makes no sense. I've got a feeling that perhaps some dipsticks might be bent, or guys are using a too-large filter that's trapping extra oil... something? I believe what everyone is saying about needing more than the book says to "read" full... but reading full is only as accurate as the dipstick... if the dipstick is resting in the wrong place...?
If it works for y'all, great... but next time I was around another Miata of same year, I'd check my oil w/other car's dipstick.

Sam, maybe it's 3.6 + whatever the filter takes? Which would be a hair under 4 qts.
I have been buying the gallon jugs of Mobil1, pour in about 3.5 qts fast, then top off to full. I usually have just over 1 qt left over in the jug. Which is great for topping off other stuff like the lawnmowers and other vehicles. Yes, I've been using Mobil synthetic in my lawnmowers.

Ahem, there are only 4 quarts in a gallon.
Which gets me thinking...
Would you still run synthetic in you lawnmower if you didn't have that leftover quart? I mean, six dollar a quart oil just seems silly for cutting the grass, but I bet that's exactly what some MBA at ExxonMobile had in mind when he came up with the 5qt "convenience" jug.
Use the lower per unit cost to upsell the consumer, then sit back and wait for the "waste not, want not" pangs to kick in and viola you've got people using "the good stuff" in all sort of places they wouldn't otherwise consider (or pay the premium price for).
The funny thing is, had I not read this post (and if I had a lawnmower) I would probably be doing the same thing. LOL, Thanks Ben, yet another way this board has helped me saved money.
