MS3 Extra on 96 Miata Questions
Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum and wanted to get some info. I am going DIY turbo on 96 Miata. I've ms3 extra'd about 5 cars now but all obd1. This is my first obd2 build.
Couple questions to see what others have done.
what type of crank and cam sensors in the 96? Hall, optical, VR?
how are you running your EGR? Did you delete it?
are you running ms standalone or wiring in with stock ECU to retain emissions readout. Especially looking from input from CA and AZ folks since emissions get kinda strict here and heat can be an issue.
So the plan is to wire ms3 to run spark and fuel and pickup all sensors for datalogging. Then let the stock ECU run idle, emissions etc to keep obd2 intact.
was wanting to see if anyone else has done this and if there were any challenges or unexpected obd2 codes that showed Up?
my previous miata was a 92 and turbo then v8 conversion. Now I want the new miata intact with a good turbo setup.
btw I'm keeping A.C. power steering etc as this is a daily driver.

Ok I think I figured out the crank and can are VR sensors but would love to confirm. So far build looks like this.
GT2871 turbo
manifold tbd
custom exhaust and dp. I am a welder so will fab the exhaust and intercooler pipes.

thinking 46 or 52 lb injectors. 52 might be troublesome at idle so may start a little lower.
stock coilpacks controlled by ms
walbro 255lph hp pump.
retain maf for obd2 ms3 will run map

Thanks vitamin j. That is exactly what I was looking for. So the cas is the same they just added an extra crank sensor for misfire detection. perfect. I know what to do now.
For the egr worst case scenario i can block it off and emulate it with an arduino to keep the obd2 happy. I'm used to obd1 stuff so just wanted to be sure why the extra crank sensor on 96 and 97. Will post as it progresses. So far just waiting on parts and going to start soldering the ms3.

If you need OBD2 for emmisions reasons a MS3 is going to illegal even piggy backed.....so I would just setup the car so you can easily swap back to stock for inspection. Run the MS3 the other 364 days a year.

Yeah I am in AZ and we are just slightly less aggressive than CA on emissions. I do have to run in parallel. and do have to try and keep OBD2 readiness tests running. The good news is that I can get 2 year tags and swap ECU's back and forth if I had to. I am trying to challenge myself to build a OBD2 car that is technically legal for emissions and still turbo with full fuel and spark control. Worst case I think I could setup an arduino to run the readiness test outputs if anything pops a code. I'm digging into the signals this weekend to see if I still want to pursue this or just run a breakout box or similar to swap back and forth. Only thing is I would have to swap injectors too since I'll be running something larger than stock. Not a big deal every 2 years. In AZ technically as long as you pass the OBD2 readiness tests it's legal. I am sure in the fine print it's illegal but the guys I've talked to at the smog stations aren;t concerned as long as they can plug it in their machine and it gives the green light. Thanks everyone for the input, I think for now will go the easier route since its a 2 year tag. will post updates as it progresses. Will just get the breakout box from DIYAutotune. Better to control everything anyways. Being the first OBD2 car I'll megasquirt we will see how it all works out.Was hoping those smarter than I had found a way.
On the arduino stuff we have built some pretty cool stuff but I am sure others have more knowledge than I. The last thing we did was in my brothers 78 Z28, ran twin turbo LT1 motor, Ms3x and an arduino running touch screens for the instrument cluster. They plot out and display all the sensors from Ms3x and speed rev etc etc even the fuel level. pretty fun experiment. We will see on the turbo I agree it is on the larger side but this will be an experiment for some time and starting low but eventually will be doing water injection and cranking up the boost, building the motor etc.
