Default MS2 or MS3?

I've got a 97 Miata that I'm planning on turboing. I have no intention of making big power or building the engine internals. Seems like the only good reason I would want MS3 is for the better flex fuel control. If I'm not going to build the engine does it make any sense to worry about being able to run E85?

Would you buy a PS3 or a PS4 Pro brand new on February 11th, 2020?

If I wouldn't be using any of the additional features of the PS4 then I'd buy the PS3 if it did everything I needed it to do. The difference in cost is 799 vs 1199. $400 buys a lot of tires and fuel.

Sounds like your mind is made up. Enjoy your MS2.

My mind isn't made up. That's why I'm asking. Is the MS3 worth another $400 if I don't plan on building the engine and using flex fuel, vvt, sequential ignition etc. That's why I'm wondering if it makes sense to spend the extra cash?

IMO no one should be buying a MS2 for a Miata right now. You want a megasquirt 3. If you're too cheap for that get a speeduino.

Why do you say that?

I don't feel that a MS2 offers anything significant over a speeduino.

It's not just the additional things it does that MS2 can't... it's that it does the things, better.

Ok. I appreciate that feedback. Care to elaborate why you feel this way?

I don't "feel" anything. It's facts. It's a better/newer/fitter/happier/stronger unit.

MS3 is the correct answer. If you want it cheaper, wait for a used one.

As much as I like my MS2-based MSPNP, the right answer is the MS3. One day, when I grow up, I'll get a Big Boys ECU.

If cost is an issue, just get a Speeduino. WTMTronic's Seawolf/Seadog UABC (or whatever) is solid. The community at Speeduino is super helpful.

MS3 mini is 750$ shipped and has everything the regular MS3 has processing wise, but only one input and no bluetooth. If you can do without it, you should definitely get it.

+1 right here. If I could redo it all over again I would pony up the extra $400 for an MS3 (someday I will also do this). $400 is small compared to the grand scheme of things, especially if you're already planning to drop $4k to $6k to turbo.

Thanks for those who provided decent advice. I ordered an MS3 Pro today!
