Default Intake Options

In order to keep engine bay looking as stock as possible, I am contemplating keeping the existing filter box, rather than going to the typical cone filter.

1) For 200 WHP application, how bad of an idea is this?

According to my simple test, NA pressure drop differential from 1.5K to 7K RPM on the stock intake (total) is about 6KPa, as measured by difference in MAP readings at WOT. (0.8 psi). This leads me to believe that my filter box will yield less than 1 psi drop at intake to turbo, which, as a DD does not concern me (my little turbo will fall off at high RPM anyway).

2) As a middle ground alternative, is the MSM box and filter larger than the 1999 version, and could I fit one of those in place of the stock unit?

3) Anyone else gone this route, added a cone and seen an improvement?

Pretty sure the MSM box is the same.

Why not just gut the box inside and route a proper cone into it with a black silicone crossover pipe like the one TDR (I think) uses or something like that? Then cut holes in the bottom/side of the box for better airflow than the little snorkel.

I dunno just a thought

The pressure drop is mostly from the transition from flat to round from the top of the box. And the pressure drop pre-turbo is an even bigger deal than N/A. I wouldnt do it. You can always fiberglass your own airbox and make it look almost OEM if you have the patience and attention to detail.
