Exclamation Help! Is my turbo too big???

Hey Guys, I need your help,

So i'm turbo charging my (stock) 1.8l 1998 nb, and I ordered a t3/t4 ebay turbo. My friend thinks the turbo is way too big and will spool at like 5-6k which isnt ideal.

Has anyone ran a similar sized turbo on a 1.8? If so, at what rpm do you go into boost?

Here are the specs:
Compressor
Trim: 55
Inducer Diameter: 50.5 mm
Exducer Diameter: 76 mm
A/R: 0.5

Turbine
Trim: 73
Inducer Diameter: 65.5 mm
Exducer Diameter: 55.9 mm
A/R: 0.63

Your friend is right. That is a terrible choice of turbo.

Yep, I would go for a similar one but with the .60 a/r compressor. Probably about 4000-4500 rpm to 20psi on my setup.

What would be your estimated guess on when I would hit 8psi with stock setup with the 0.50 a/r compressor?

I ran a similar sized turbo several years ago. I've since gone to larger turbos. If I remember right i was running about 25psi and getting there in about the 4500-4700ish rpm range. I used a full 3" exhaust with no cat, so very free flowing. Also had a good sized bar and plate style intercooler that flowed well also. Since you already have it you may as well try it to see how you like it. Its a t3 flange so lots of options to swap to if you dont like it.

A GTX3076 has full spool at 4500rpm on my 1.8L. The 3076 has a 58mm inducer wheel and a 60mm exducer wheel. The ebay-special turbo will obviously have worse spool than say a genuine Garrett for the same given diameter wheels, but with almost 10mm smaller wheel for the intake and 5mm for the exhaust I don't see how it can be that bad (5-6K) unless your entire setup is equally flawed as the turbo.

My journal bearing eBay 2871 reached full boost somewhere in the mid 4k range on a NA8 if I remember correctly. 5k doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility for that monstrosity.

I would guess around 4K you'll hit 8-10 psi with that turbo and a cast manifold and 3" exhaust.
