Hi,
I just had my lucky day and got some used Toyota Celica 1,8 VVT coils over here in Germany, which is like Christmas; birthday and New Year on one day. Now I have a question according the connector pins. I haven't found the pins which are mentioned above over here and it would be too expensive to order them from the US. But I have found pins with the part numer 175027 which in my understanding should be eqaul to the 173631 parts (only they are loose pieces and not strip pieces) - can someone confirm this? Product-details: 175027-1#features PDF-sheet with comparsion: pdf-sheet Link to German seller Right? 2nd question - I still have a noob question about the installation on the 1999 - do I have to put something between the cable coming from the cars ecu and the coils? (I can not identify the ingniter mentioned) - or can I simply take the right lines at the connection before the old MX-5 coils and make my harness from there?. My 1,6l 1999 has the newer 1,8l schematics. (Sorry, that is quite hard for me to explain in English) Does someone have a fitting connector for the connection before the old coils? Thanks again. Zaphod, only the early 1.6s use the external ignitor that you are seeing pictures of. Those of us that have later model cars are going go have to cut out harnesses and install new connectors. We've been unable to find the correct connector to just make a PNP harness while retaining stock connectors.

Anyone else get longer coils then they were suppsed too? I left the part number at home, but My COPs stick up about an inch over where the valve cover valley. Since I got them for 30 bucks shipped I dont really feel like dealing with getting the seller to admit he has the wrong part number posted and getting them sent back.
So anyone see an issue with just making sure the valve cover holes are sealed (with another seal), and running the longer COPs? |
Damn.. I'm only to page 10 of this thread.. I should get back to work.
But this will be on my winter projects list :) |

i dont see a problem with it.
Thanks brain, ill post pics and dimensions to allow other people to see that they can use the V6 coils from avalons and 4runners and such. Which these are from. |
My first set were "slightly" long, but still fit all the way down. They fired inverted with ms but ran fine on the stock ecu (WTF, i know).
My second set after burning out a couple from the first tring to get MSII to control the ign were the ones almost everyone now has. They fire normal with MS, and still run fine on the stock ecu. The first set I bought under the assumption they were from some sort of camery, and the second set from a scion. |
Well the 4 cyl camerys should work, the v6 ones are longer.
Just for reference these are from an Avalon with part number 90919-02238 They look the same as everyone else's just obnoxiously long (6.5 inches total length, 5 and 5/8s of shaft). I will post where i got seals and how to make it work later. Most likely i will end up using Ben's plate sitting between the original seal (on the COP) and the auxiliary one to hold the seal in place and to the valve cover. Any recommendations on a place to get rubber material? Don't say McMaster I am going through their catalog now. |
Loki if they're an inch higher then the studs aren't going to be long enough. If you want I can build you another plate, with studs 1.5" too long, and then you can cut them to length yourself, or just use a standard nut on them.
|
Oh i didnt know we were getting studs I thought just the plate. Ill take another look at the plate and let you know. I assume you weren't rushing these out the door today.
|
Ben lets do the longer stud as Im not 100% sure what Im doing yet, but i think that would work.

Hi, I just made the harness for my 99 COPs. I reused the connector ontop of the valve cover which connects to the old coils.
(left upper side of the picture, right connector) http://www.ingenieure-reichel.de/upl...er/COP_006.jpg Looks like this inside http://www.ingenieure-reichel.de/upl...er/COP_005.jpg You can pull the orange part out with the help of a screwdriver, has two notches on top which hold it in place At the underside of the old pins inside you have also little notches, same system as the new coil-connectors use. http://www.ingenieure-reichel.de/upl...er/COP_007.jpg Push them down and you can pull the old cables out. http://www.ingenieure-reichel.de/upl...er/COP_008.jpg http://www.ingenieure-reichel.de/upl...er/COP_009.jpg Now you can use the Braineack pins on the new harness and just push them in. Works! http://www.ingenieure-reichel.de/upl...er/COP_010.jpg Then you simly push the orange part on again! http://www.ingenieure-reichel.de/upl...er/COP_011.jpg Now you got a plug and play harness. Problem is - I get no spark. Car is cranking but not firing. Maybe my coils dont reach inside far enough? Looks like the coils need to be grinded a little at both sides to fit another 2-3mm further down. How do your Toyota coils look like at the inside? I see just a spring inside of them. Is this right? Or is there some sort of cap for the top of the plug needed? Someone with a 99 and the cop conversion knows something? Thanks, greets. |
Sven, POPSTOY on miata.net is having the same problem. Have you figured anything out yet? I have a set of Toyota coils waiting to go on my 99.

well it's an 2000, so the my old ones had internal igniters, i didn't have to worry about tach input, i just left that wire hanging just in case i wanna use it in the future. i just finished it today, and i was on empty after doing it, so nothing to tell if i have better MPG yet, i used to have a small stutter at idle, and now thats gone, and it does seem smoother, and it feels to pull a little harder, but it could be me. i was freaked out after cutting the first pack, so i had half COP and half plug wires, and started it up, and it worked so i continued on until finish, i wanna go back in and tidy everything up a bit when i get the chance, more factory looking.
Thanks, Jason |
Sven is a little different. He has a 1.6 in his '99 as he isn't in the US. So i have a feeling his direct input is not going to be a help. We don't have the same connectors for our coils for one.
|
I don't see how this is so difficult for people.
|
Gotcha. Sounded familiar, so I'm just trying to cover all possible angles. I don't want to hack in to mine and have the same thing happen.
|
the only things you technically need out of the harness is the trigger leads.
the brown and brown/yellow. +12v and grounds can be pulled from anywhere. |
Hi Braineack,
I know it's so easy and I have a harness which is double-checked and O.K. Also the trigger wires should be alright. Problem is I get no spark. The Coils sit as I already said about 2-3mm out of the valve cover (2-3mm space between valve cover and rubber seal of the coils) due to a little contact of the coils on the sides of the valve cover. I will take off a little to make them fit flush. Can you please tell me if my coils are "normal" - if I look inside I see just some springs inside. There are no caps or anything to fit the spark-plugs? Greets |
I have a feeling your COPs just aren't sitting on your spark plugs. Take your old plug wires. Plug the coil side of them into the COP, then put the other end on the plugs like usual. That will guarantee you have a connection to your plugs with the COPs.
|
shove a wire into the coil and lay the other end near a ground somewhere, the lift hook is a good one.
make sure it's actually getting spark. a small gap shouldn't prevent the spark from hitting the plug, but i could very well be what the prob be. |
