1.6 Turbo Project While im in the USAF
Ok so i have a 92 miata that i want to leave with my mechanic to rebuild the engine and upgrade to forged pistons and rods and everything so that it can handle 20-25 psi but i want to have a boost controller to run like 10-15 daily. My problem is that i leave for Air Force basic training in about 35 days and i need a good list of all the parts i need for this project. Im leaving the car for him to work on so that when im done with bmt and tech school (8-10 months from now) ill have my miata boosted and ready for me. Im running out of time to get this all figured out and i was wanting to see if any of you can help me out. budget is around 5-8k. Ive looked into several turbo kits but i feel like it would be better to buy everything separate. I ran a pos greddy turbo on it for a few weeks but had afr problems so i parked it and pulled the engine and everything is fine. i was running everything stock so i figured that was the problem. My mechanic works on sr20det engines all day and could probably make the list but i want to have a list to take to him. Sorry for long post lol any questions lemme know

Dude. Search. Your post indicates that while you sort of know what you're looking for, you don't know and don't want to get into the details of tuning and the selection of the different components you'll need to properly put together this motor.

What AFSC? I'm 2P051 and my tech school was over 6 months. Can't be too many others are that long so I'm guessing intel/linguist or something related to radio/radar.

Its not that i dont want to spend the time to search i just figured if someone has already done the research and is willing to share the info i would appreciate it. Ill check out that guide thanks. Im 2M032 Missile and Space Systems i actually cant find any info about the tech school. My recruiter told me to expect 6-8 months so i really dont know. I see your at Eglin AFB I live about a hour away from Panama city beach in Chipley. I leave for basic may 21st.

1. Since you're starting from scratch, build a 1.8 instead of a 1.6.
2. Spell out your goal in HP, not psi. 20psi on a 2554 is a lot less power than 20psi on a GT35.
3. What is your intended purpose for the car? Street car requirements are very different than dedicated track car requirements.

Ive considered going with a 1.8 but my 1.6 is still in great shape...i would be happy to have 200-250 hp but ive seen people mention that if im going to build for 250 i mite as well build for like 400 and just run it at 250. It will be for the street for the most part thats why i want to really just run around 200 but i do plan on having another daily driver so i can play with this one a little more. Since time is a big issue i think im going to rebuild my 1.6 with maybe some forged pistons and rods along with all other high end this and that and run stock for now. Then later maybe get that BEGI setup for like 5300

I know I'm new here but dude, stop thinking out loud and use the search bar. 400 horsepower? Honestly? Have you ever felt what that is like in a car that weighs 2200 pounds? Do some research, find out what happens to a 1.6 car when it hits 160 HP and then you might reconsider your "build". Plan things out and do it yourself if you want to save money instead of piecing a kit together and letting someone else do the work.
1. Figure out how you will tune the car
2. Accomplish tuning your car before buying a turbo
3. Buy a kit 2300 bucks and up for a decent one
4. install kit, new clutch, new diff and tune.
5. Drive happy
That is my plan, I know what parts I'm buying, I have a checklist of steps and I know how much I'll spend. If you don't have the 3 hours of internet browsing to figure that out, you won't have the hours of time to spend making the car run.
Or I just fed a troll and deserve to be flamed.

I would rather build my engine for as much as i can so that i wont have to rebuild it for more power..hence the reason why i want a boost controller so i can run low boost till im use to it....i had a turbo on my miata running 10psi but it was running lean so i quit driving it and pulled the engine to see if there was any damage(there wasnt)...i have drivin my friends 240s that were at 350+ hp(i know the weight difference so shut up)....im not really woried about saving money its just that those kits dont come with the parts i want...

Dude if you know all the prices why are you asking for advice? You know what you want, you know what you're paying. What is in the kit you don't want or do want? I'm sure if you call Bell they can help you out if you are spending that much. Also if you knew the weight difference in the cars you would know 400 HP is stupid. I know guys on here have it, but they are equipped and probably know how to handle it. I personally have sat in a 160 HP Miata, a 200 HP Miata and a 390 HP Miata. That last one spun tires starting in second gear. Oh ya and thats 16 x 9's with big fat ------- tires. You plan on doing custom body work to handle that power? Gonna break 8 grand easy if you aren't doing it yourself. But then again, you know everything right?

Ive looked into the greddy kits, flying miata, and BEGI but it seems like i could get a better deal piecing together a kit. I mainly wanted to see if anyone else have created their own kit or if everyone just gets one of these...i will looking into that link also though thanks
As far as built engines go, if your that worried about popping an engine. just stick with the OEM engine, if it does break its not expensive to drop in another used engine. You can look through my build thread. WonTon thanks for the info. Ive went through the first few pages of your build so far and i saw you where getting rid of a begi manifold is there any reason why you decided against begi or was it a just becasue thing? because that was the kit that i was leaning towards. Ive had real bad experiences with cars and since this is the first one that im building i would like to have everything built as strong as i can, thats why i want to go forged instead of OEM. Id rather spend the money now then have to pull it again down the road.

I went the route I went cause I had the money to spend and wanted a custom set up and to try something new and different. You can get 250 to 300 out of a good own engine as long as you take care of your stuff and properly tune with supporting mods, my engine is 100% oem internal wise and my goals for it are 300. But to each their own.
