I started a thread at "TheFiringLine" in the Law and Civil Rights Forum that has already exceeded my expectations. Im on my phone, so could somebody could find and link it.

Now reading the TFL board, the second response contains wording that I probably should have used:
It's not a "right to kill." It's a "right to defend oneself that may result in the death of another." Still reading, thanks for the link! |
Lots of stuff in there to consider. That forum is awesome. I visit it every day. The mods there tolerate no political bullshit... opinions still abound, but I think they're even worse sticklers for "quality over quantity" than we are here.
I highly recommend you add that forum to your favorites and browse it occasionally... the thread on the Zimmerman trial is also worth the long read. |

So, on May 25, there is this news story:
Bobby Lee Culler Busted By Melbourne Police, BCSO | "According to the Melbourne Police Department, officers located Culler at about 11 a.m. today, and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office helicopter responded to MPD’s request of assistance and was able to pinpoint Culler getting into the back seat of a vehicle. Then, this on July 11:Through a coordinated effort, the vehicle was stopped and surrounded by officers. Culler was then taken into custody at 12:15 p.m. at Cypress Ave. and Law St. in Melbourne without incident. Culler had been evading arrest by the Melbourne Police Department for several days, and was suspected to have fled from police numerous times over the last week." Melbourne homeowner shot intruder, police say | News - Home According to Melbourne police, three or four males -- in their teens or early 20s -- broke into the home and tried to rob the family. The homeowner, however, shot at the intruders, striking one of them in the arm, police said. The family's dog was also injured, but no one else was hurt, police said. The suspected intruder who was shot was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center. Police identified two of the intruders as Bobby Culler and Leonard Valentine. Culler, who was shot, was arrested on charges of having an outstanding warrant. Valentine faces charges of armed burglary and violation of probation. So even when the cops catch the bad guys, they apparently get out of jail in a couple of weeks in order to return to threatening the lives of others. Super. |
Culler's "outstanding warrant" in the july 11 story was probably for failure to appear in court for charges related to the may 25 story.

After a quick google search:

But I was told that defending myself with a firearm would just escalate the confrontation???

Here's another article... pretty much what we already knew. It also reminds a person who is interested in gun crime to take a serious look at the difference between correlation and causation... which is something that both sides to poorly.
The long and short of the facts are that guns in circulation in the last 30 years has tripled, and gun-related crime (not just as a percentage of the population... but the actual numbers) has been cut by more than half. I'm not going to jump on the "guns don't cause crime" soapbox yet, but I'm almost there. Arkansas teachers to carry 9 mm guns on campus come fall - Washington Times
I'll be interested to see how this turns out. |
A couple of Texas criminals had the tables turned on them when a Texas man — taken as a hostage along with his wife and forced to rob a bank — decided he’d had enough and pulled a gun out of his glove box and shot them, killing one. The suspects, Jordan Kutach, 20, and Preston Kutach, 21, had abducted the couple and forced them to withdraw an undisclosed amount of cash from the bank, The Blaze reported. Police believe the woman was targeted because the suspects knew she worked at the First National bank of Eagle Lake in Columbus, Texas, the facility they robbed. Colorado renters told to toss guns or move out
follow up: A controversial gun policy at an apartment complex for seniors has been thrown out after a 9Wants to Know report. The Douglas County Housing Partnership, a multi-jurisdictional housing authority, held an emergency board of directors meeting late Wednesday afternoon. Board members decided that the policy, which would have prohibited residents from having firearms in their homes, will not go into effect. The Douglas County Housing partnership owns Oakwood Apartments in Castle Rock. It was purchased with federal funds and is supported by local, state, and federal tax dollars. |
^A very one-way call from the insurance company to the board probably told them to shut the fuck up and call them next time they get a bright idea. I bet there are literally dozens of lawyers lined up to take a case like that on behalf of the residents and sue the shit out of everybody all the way up to the county itself.
At smaller levels, like cities, towns, even up to counties, they just don't have the money to be anti-gun anymore. Except perhaps San Francisco, who thinks that elected officials spending time banning a brand of ammo that hasn't been manufactured in 20 years is a good way to make us safer, and then immediately do an about-face when the NRA threatens to sue... again. http://www.calgunlaws.com/facing-nra...ion-after-all/ After all, SF put a proposition (Prop H) on the ballot in 2005 to ban handguns. They KNEW it wouldn't stand up because it conflicted with state preemption laws. A nearly identical proposition had been previously overturned on those grounds. After it passed, the NRA took it to court, just like everyone knew they would. The NRA won on state pre-emption grounds, just like everyone knew they would. Then SF appealed it. And lost, just like everyone knew they would. San Francisco squandered nearly a million dollars, including $380,000 to the NRA for legal costs, on a proposition everyone knew would be overturned. AND ANOTHER AGAIN! They'd tried almost the exact same thing back in 1982 and it was shot down by state court, which was appealed... and they lost on appeal!!! Guess who "they " are? Yup, fucking Feinstein... not shitting you, she's been trying to ban guns for well over 30 years now in the city, and has spend millions of dollars of city/cnty money, and lost in state court 3 times on the exact same thing. You think they'd learn... but no, they're still fighting Jackson vs. City/Cnty of San Fran which has been in works for almost 4 years... scheduled for orals in October before the 9th Circuit. This lawsuit challenges San Frans requirement that IN OUR OWN HOME, any gun not actually in your hand has to be locked up. The lawsuit also challenges the current ban on the sale of hollow-point ammo in the city... possession OK, just no sales. Jackson v. San Francisco - Calguns Foundation Wiki |
