As state and national legislators consider gun control laws in the wake of last month's Connecticut school shooting, Florida finds itself in a gun violence depression. The Firearm-involved violent crime rate has dropped 33 percent between 2007 and 2011, while the number of issued concealed weapons permits rose nearly 90 percent during that time, state records show.

The argument then comes full circle about the number of people killed every year in cars. On average, 11,000 people each year are killed BY DRUNK DRIVERS ALONE... we call them "accidents". Yet we don't hold bars/bartender accountable when a dude leaves there drunk and t-bones a minivan, or thehost of a party, or the liquor company, or the car manufacturer, or the guy who designed the traffic lights... yadda yadda.
I agree with the rest of your argument though.

This is disgusting. We can't have this kind of senseless violence. I demand congress move forward on sweeping legislation on ferries and stop the sale, distribution and transfer of ferries that carry more then 30 people. If only 30 people had been on this boat we may of only had 1 injury instead of the 50. And even if it prevents 1 injury. It is worth it. Think about the kids THE KIDS!!!

"The president is going to act," said Biden, giving some comments to the press before a meeting with victims of gun violence. "There are executives orders, there's executive action that can be taken. We haven't decided what that is yet. But we're compiling it all with the help of the attorney general and the rest of the cabinet members as well as legislative action that we believe is required."

Fairfax, Va. – The National Rifle Association of America is made up of over 4 million moms and dads, daughters and sons, who are involved in the national conversation about how to prevent a tragedy like Newtown from ever happening again. We attended today's White House meeting to discuss how to keep our children safe and were prepared to have a meaningful conversation about school safety, mental health issues, the marketing of violence to our kids and the collapse of federal prosecutions of violent criminals.
We were disappointed with how little this meeting had to do with keeping our children safe and how much it had to do with an agenda to attack the Second Amendment. While claiming that no policy proposals would be “prejudged,” this Task Force spent most of its time on proposed restrictions on lawful firearms owners - honest, taxpaying, hardworking Americans. It is unfortunate that this Administration continues to insist on pushing failed solutions to our nation's most pressing problems. We will not allow law-abiding gun owners to be blamed for the acts of criminals and madmen. Instead, we will now take our commitment and meaningful contributions to members of congress of both parties who are interested in having an honest conversation about what works - and what does not.

20- and especially 30-round AR magazines
full size magazines for any semi-auto pistol you might see yourself buying in the near future.
If there is no other immediate change to gun-laws, the one thing the gun-world predicts you will lose is the right to buy is magazines with a capacity over 10 rounds.
Even though yesterday's california school shooting involved only 3 shots fired from a shotgun...

I really doubt anything is going to actually pass. The only thing that might take effect for some short time is an executive order and I am not sure Obama is gonna use that much political capital on gun control. He has the debt ceiling and immigration reform to deal with on the top of his agenda. I'll wait until this stuff is all over with and buy when prices go back down.

I agree that I don't see an AWB or Magazine Ban happening in the near future, but that didn't stop me from back-odering a 10pk of PMAGs from Brownells a few weeks ago. And as soon as I see Glock 19 mags for sale anywhere other than Gunbroker or Craigslist for $50ea, I'm gonna get a dozen... and some 33rd'ers for my future Sub2000k purchase.
Politicians are all lawyers and businessmen... they're not stupid. Every one of them to the last man knows exactly how little impact an AWB or Mag-ban will have on crime. If the pro-guns types really wanted to stop an AWB or mag-ban in it's tracks when they saw the inevitable writing on the wall that it WAS going to happen... is insist that the law also apply to law enforcement.
The pure fact that any company that sells any type of product is back-ordered 1,000,000 of them is enough of a indicator that "Americans" really like their AR's.
What I do see happening is the NRA supporting actual enforcement of the many current laws on the books that stand a chance of curtailing the crazies from legally purchasing guns... ie, getting data into the NICS system for a better screen. Also, stepping up prosecution of straw-buyers.
I personally would love to have a public-access NICS system where I (along with a seller/buyer) could sit down at a computer and a citizen could run their own background check on a potential buyer. Ie... if you wanted to buy a used gun, you had to create an account within NICS and then authorize a seller to perform a check. There is no personal information provided within NICS, the system just gives you the Yes/No approval. Getting people to utilize the system would be hard, but as a "law abiding" person, I'd do it just as an extra "cover my ***" step... so would many others.
If NICS become mandatory for private sales, I can see gunstores having "This Monday Only... FREE background checks with purchase of $100 of ammo" types of events.
In any case, behind closed doors, all laws that get passed are a compromise between the parties to give/take. In order to keep an AWB off the table, I think something is going to have to give... maybe this is an opportunity to force Constitutional Carry at the Federal Level... give the MAY ISSUE states a kick to the *****. Can you imagine what Feinstein would say if she was forced with deciding over a Federal AWB, or having California go SHALL ISSUE?
