The Current Events, News, and Politics Thread
I'm going to put on my serious hat for a moment...
On Friday (Jul 19) at 9:59am, I got a phone call from a corporate VP at Nexstar, instructing me to route News Nation PGM, the full signal including Nielsen watermark and commercials, to a certain outbound video path from my building which feeds a cloud-hosted distribution hub that enables other stations within the company to take in our signal.
There are 197 TV stations within the Nexstar group, and many of them are in smaller to midsized markets, and do not keep their local news dept staffed on weekends.
Throughout the course of the day we also started increasing our own weekend staffing at all three major NewsNation sites (Chicago, NYC and DC), writing procedures for changing around the programming lineup on Sunday, having the graphics department get a head-start on creating the relevant slides, and so on.
And sure enough, come Sunday afternoon, most of the local Nexstar stations across the country had News Nation up on their channel.
Basically, our news dept knew that Biden was going to announce his withdrawal on Sunday, we merely didn't know the exact time when that announcement would be made.
And I honestly don't know exactly how we knew that with such a high level of confidence.

Have you ever watched the 2010 film Morning Glory? Specifically the third act, in which the Harrison Ford character lies to his News Director that he's going out to cover the Sauerkraut Festival, but instead rolls up on the lawn of the Governor's summer house just as the Feds show up to arrest him on charges of racketeering?
Sometimes it actually does happen like that.
(A few of our guys who work downstairs in Feeds hate that scene, because they just jump right out of the truck and are instantly live on air, whereas in reality it would have taken 5-10 minutes to set up the feed via microwave or satellite, as we didn't have bonded-cell systems in 2010.)

Everyone suspected that Biden would be withdrawing at some point in the near future.
I'm not sure how many people had a high degree of confidence that Biden's withdrawal would be announced specifically on Sunday June 21, to the point where they set up a lot of overtime and scheduled a lot of programming changes specifically to accommodate that evet.

I do not believe biden had planned to finish the next term if he was elected. Most likely the plan was, and his legacy would be, the person that made the first woman president. Unfortunately for him his poor performance was not going to allow him to be re-elected and dropping out was the only other option. We should be concerned that whoever is really in control might alter this election in harris's favor. I think in the back of everyone's mind we know who is in control. We saw too much of Mark Milley over the past few years.

1: Orange Man Bad. Electing a literal sack of moldly tangerines would be preferable, in their mind, to electing Trump.
2: So long as Biden made it through November, with Kamala as his VP, then he could resign immediately after the innaguration and we'd have a full four years of President Harris (a brown woman), with her eligible for a second term come 2028.
It will be truly fascinating to watch the next few weeks, to see who the party appoints as both their Presidential nominee as well as that person's VP. They've made it clear that the will of the people bears little sway with them.
Our source of information dictates our knowledge. This may go beyond politics. Also, it is common knowledge that we often seek sources that align with our beliefs. This might be why so many are not open minded or not flexible. I don't believe its tribal, it is more religious.
There was a deal made. I'm sure biden said he would dropout if harris would be the nominee.

In it, there is only a single line of dialogue spoken in Russian by one of the Americans. In the third act, after Captain Ramius has mumbled an insult* (in Russian) to his own officers against Captain Mancuso, Jack Ryan, the scholar and historian, chuckles, and translates the insult to Cpt. Mancuso.
Ramius now realizes, to his surprise, that Jack is fluent in Russian.
Jack replies "Мудро изучать пути своего противника, не так ли?", which is translated via subtitles as "It is wise to study the ways of one's adversary, don't you think?"
It is for this reason that I follow a number of #VoteBlue type accounts on social media. I find that it is wise to have a first-hand view of what the far-left influencers and their sycophants are actually thinking and saying, as this helps us to understand their perceptions and motivations.
As opposed to forming my opinion of them based entirely on what is said in the far-right echo chambers, much of which amounts to hyperbole and straw-person arguments.
* = Obviously there is a joke in here somewhere about how only a communist would think that calling someone a "Cowboy" is an insult.
Not to start any conspiracy theories....that haven't already been started...but Biden dropped out of the race on plain paper, not something with the official presidential seal. And we haven't really heard from him. And we know about all of the infighting between Obama, Clinton and the rest for control of the Democratic party. Wouldn't it be nice to know that Biden did this of his free will, and said so in front of a camera? Even then, would you believe him?
