Moving on . . .

Ministry of Truth indeed!

Within 48 hours of the purchase of Twitter by Elon Musk, the Department of Homeland Security announced it is creating what the Biden Administration calls a “Disinformation Governance Board,” designed to fight disinformation and misinformation ahead of the 2022 midterm elections. Others are calling it a “ministry of truth.”

Elon Musk slams Biden's 'discomforting' 'Disinformation Governance Board' on Twitter comparing it to the **** regime: GOP demands it's 'dissolved' as its 'head' DEFENDS linking Hunter's laptop to Russia

This ****'s gettin' scary.

I will take this opportunity to point out this is, in fact, the Current Events, News and Politics thread (hence why I posted my scatological meme here before). I agree with your statement that we shouldn't care about the Sparrows' fight, but since I'm on the far side of the world right now and starved for entertainment, I take what I can get. Alas, my ability to view anything on YouTube is blocked so I am unable to participate in the contemplation of anyone's buttcrack outside of the crew I am with. That possibility does not even bear consideration...

So, this is chilling.

The 6th circuit court of appeals has upheld qualified immunity for the police officers from Parma, Ohio who arrested Anthony Novak for the crime of running a parody Facebook page making fun of the Parma PD.

In its ruling, the Court DECLINED to address whether the First Amendment covers parody Facebook pages making fun of the government (hint: it very much does), merely concluding that the unlawfulness of arresting Novak for this reason was "not clearly established at the time."

Man IDK if I'd call that one chilling. That was my first reaction but after reading a bit more. I can see the argument that the page was impersonating the police and disrupting emergency services. Honestly probably the right call by the court. Let sleeping dogs lie with this one.

1: Qualified immunity itself is a dangerous concept. It is massively over-used by the courts to absolve individuals of gross negligence and even actual malice under the banner of "We didn't know it was wrong!", a sentiment which has been uttered at many war-crimes tribunals.

B: A Facebook page is not an emergency service. Neither is the front desk at a police station. Both are community services.

III: The First Amendment protects our right to impersonate a police department for the purpose of criticism and satire.

1: I'm not sure they police were wrong though. The police have a legitimate claim in my opinion. Although if we want to be constitutionalists, there's a lot of infringement on that one.

B: What if some poor bastard needed to use Facebook to report a emergency and got the satire page instead?

III: No, the constitution says that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." It says absolutely nothing about satire. Do you actually want us to go full constitutionalist? I'm personally not opposed but a lot of **** will change.

Yes.

I do in fact remember it well. As noted by my avatar.

Who would have thought that reality would eventually catch up to my parody of it...

I gotta say, I am genuinely surprised that the liberals who I know personally are not hysterically freaking out over the leaked SCOTUS decision draft all that much.

I'm undecided as to whether they are all in complete shock and can't even, or if they're being mature for a change.

EDIT:

One of them, an old classmate of mine who is ultra-votebluenomatterwho, did delete a comment I posted in response to an image he posted.

The image was this:

And my remark (considering that he is an attorney, and a pretty good one), was something like:

Although I am personally not opposed to abortion (I consider it, on the whole, to be a net-positive for society), I'm curious to hear how you might respond to the following hypothetical argument from someone who is strongly anti-abortion: "The rights of unborn women are womens' rights."‎

No comment, no response, just deletion.

Which, if you think about it, is a pretty typical ultra-liberal thing to do. Silence all voices which oppose yours.
