my miata....

If you're hell-bent on a suby, get the bugeye, or maybe even the frogeye. Or, better yet, look for the 9-2x Aero. They were more expensive than the frogeyes, but the GM employee discount that was going on back in 05 reduced their resale to nothing. My friend picked a loaded one up for 8K. Anyway, get a 2.0L WRX/SAABaru, do a stage 2, and call it a day. The STi is an awesome car, but it's not more fun than having a WRX AND a turbo miata...

You know, I came from the Subaru world. I owned 4 of them...three with turbos. I even used to sell them. When my friend totaled my first miata, I went and bought another turbo suby...a loaded Legacy GT. It was an awesome car...reliable, practical, fast, great in the snow, etc. etc. etc. So much faster than my friend's RX-8, and more comfortable to boot. But, I just never got over the miata. I needed another one. Needed. So eventually I sold the LGT and bought one. Trust me, you will too. The miata experience is just too hard to find anywhere else.

All that grenading of the transmission only happens if you are a dumbass and shift like you're drag racing. If you shift smooth and easy, like you're supposed to, that **** doesn't happen. Seriously, I've been around a lot of suby owners for a long time. The only ones that ever had problems were the dipshits who thought that driving fast meant shifting from your shoulder with maximum force at half throttle, or doing repeated 6K clutch drops. Idiots. And then they blame the transmission for being weak.
It's not weak. They're just abusing it. It'll do just fine with a stage 2. And more than that. Speaking from a lot of experience...
But yeah, all years of the 2.0L WRX are now getting pretty affordable. So find one and keep your mx5.

I sold my 2004 WRX wagon to fund my turbo Miata project. It had 84k on the body. Tranny was fine...had to replace the clutch at 45k though.
The only thing I'd suggest if you do go the Subaru route is get a 2.5 liter. When I blew my motor, I went hybrid (2.0l heads/2.5 block + UTEC EM).
I drove the last year or so w/ 311whp/310 tq. It was damn fun and reliable.
So, if you are looking for an STI, get a 2005 or newer. There are a lot more options w/ wheels, etc. Plus, the whole package of an STI is much more than a little more HP and a 6-speed.
