2 weeks ago this car didn’t have an engine.
I threw together a used JDM block I bought in 2017 that has been sitting in the corner of 949 and then in the corner of Tarmac 88 with the cylinder head that actually came in this car when I bought it 5 years ago.
A trip to the Back Street Performance dyno last Friday and a run-whatever-I-brung mentality led to a really fun weekend.

Only making 146whp meant I was allowed to be as light as 1916lbs comp weight(with driver). Reality is, my car is about 2180lbs with driver but no ballast and no fuel, so I was running 250-300lbs heavy all weekend and was one of only 3 cars on 205mm tires. Kutil's best T1 min was ~89.7 on 225/45 R7 and I matched that with 205/50s.

I killed the last two of my spare ARP studded and Amsoil greased OEM hubs on Friday and switched to the BroFab hubs midday right before Race 1. They are a great value, immediately noticeable was that they lessened my pad knockback and even sharpened the steering. The piece of mind they provided me was also wonderful, no longer having to catch a soft growl or vague steering input to prevent a catastrophic failure.
My car has proven to kill new OEM/Centric Premium hubs in less than 3 hours of run time. Doing so with 5 total hubs on a random assortment of tires: 205-225 R7, 225 RT660, 205 AO52, 215 gForce Slick.

Saturday morning I went up to some fresh Prebed GLoc R16s(from R12s) on Danny's advice and liked them alot. They were pretty similar in overall characteristics but felt much more consistent throughout a race. I think some of that might be due to pad thickness, as the R12s I had run down to ~2-3mm of material and they were knockback-ing much worse than the brand new R16s did.

I knew that 146whp was literally bringing a knife to a gunfight, but I know MidO well and believed I could race with best of these guys.
Qualified P16 of ~37.
Race 1: P10 with a 1:37.2 new PB.
Race 2: P12 with a 1:36 new PB. I was able to draft Andy Smedgegard and keep the front of the field in view for most of this race. That felt really good.
Race 3: DNF after a defensive mistake and a voluntary 4 off caused some splitter damage.
Race 4 in the rain: P13 from P37(DFL). 205 RT660 are baaaaad rain tires. I won't be doing that again. I actually have a set of H2Os sitting in the shop, but opted not to bring 16 wheels/tires. They may have netted me a podium or T5, if only...
Race 5: P7 from P13(12 after Marcus left early) in the exhibition race on the 17” hotboi wheels.

I never finished behind my qually pace and only got faster as the weekend progressed. Great success! /Borat

Yea, it was super fun to drive at 163whp, 2250lbs with a splitter and 225/45 R7 last year. I'd like to get that motor figured out and put back in. Maybe try it at 171whp and on 245/40/15 200tw.
160-170whp BPs have won races, but that was in the first year, before Eric and the S2Ks were all K24'd.

Is there a spinny dorito weight penalty?

doward 08-09-2021 07:36 PM

I was gonna chop this up into clips, but its actually pretty entertaing from green to single file formation around 10 minutes in, so I stopped it there.

Race 5: Exhibition only, no points. Mixed field, some on 200tw, some on Hoosiers but starting at the back, I am on scrub MX5 Cup BFG gForce Slicks.
Best laps in the low 38s compared to 36.9 and low 37s on Hoosier R7s in the points races.
Fun opening battle with Ryan Kristoff's GTL CRX after a good start.
Eric Kutil bumpdraft at 5:25
, followed by Austin Hertle/Emile Tabb/Tom O'Gorman(driving Andy Smedegard's car) freight train. Bill/Riley Griffin splitter slalom at 8:40

I found my new favorite brake pad. G-Loc R16 for Wilwood DynaPro4 7812 pad shape.

I ran what remained of my R12s for practice and qually. Went to the R16 for Race 1-5.
I previously was on R18 and stepped all the way back down to R12 for less initial bite and a more realistic/usable temp range for my lightweight/low power. I had some crumbling with the R18s that I attributed to running them too cold.
The 16s were way more consistent throughout the sessions/races than the 12s, almost like I was previously just on the edge of what heat the 12s liked. I never had any real fade, but they would get softer or more vague late in races.
The 16s were super confidence inspiring and I was brake battling with several modern ABS/mk60 cars this weekend on my non-ABS 205mm tire TSE DynaPro 11.75 kit.

Also, the BroFab pics.

Don't think it'd be much of an exploit unless it can make flat power. I'd love 13b in my miata and once I fail at remote mount turbo I'm willing to give it a go, for science. WIth no avg hp formula it's like NASA of old, make your HP for as many RPM as possible. Granted that would be +3% hit vs -1% so I dunno, maybe you could make peaky 13b work.

I'm not sure it would actually be peaky. Down on peak torque vs the K24 cars FOR SURE, but i bet you could end up with it making largely the same torque for 5000rpm or so. Then slam a rowdy rear gear in it.

Of course, this is all internet napkin math based upon rhetorical motors.

NASA Paperwork done for next weekend.
My medical is expired, so I am just going to run TT5.

Mid Ohio again.
1:36.474 Pro Course TT5 record is STRONG, having been set at National Championships two years ago. All the Pro Course TT records are pretty strong for this reason.
1:38.835 Club Course record looks reachable. It is held by a good Tarmac 88 customer, so I'll feel kinda bad taking it from him. Kinda.

Like TT6, Sonny holds the Pro and I took the Club last year.

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...f4a7dfd49e.jpg

Optimal Lap from GLTC data shows a 1:35.979, but with an outlier sector at the end of the lap that drops a few tenths. I got the tow of a lifetime from Andy Smedegard to run that 36.9 real lap, which lead to the 36.871 rolling, which is where most of the optimal sectors come from. I was ~80lbs under xT5 weight too.

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...9a62a3a237.png

My 146.05 peak run makes 140.75 NASA Average.

2250lbs Min Comp Weight
-.4 for Weight Factor
-.2 for BBK (TSE 11.75" DynaPro front, FlowForce Sport Rotor adaptor rear)
-.7 for A arms
-.5 for 4" front splitter
= 142.41 Max Average Horespower.

That gives me ~2.5whp cushion.
If I want more cushion:
2260lbs gets me to 143.0 avg
2276lbs gets me to 144.0 avg

OOF.

Watch me throw away a class win AND 3 predicted Track Records in a row.
Current TT5 Track Record: 1:38.8
35
Best lap on video: 1:38.9
88(.978 by transponder)

Lap 1: 2nd flyer of the session, OK lap. 2 off Turn 11 into Thunder Valley. Pretty scary spot, but I seem unphased on video. I stayed in the throttle to collect the slide, but a big lift once the car was straight to get back on track cost me ~.5
Lap 2: A missed 4-5 shift in thunder valley before Turn 12. Predicted 1:38.
82 briefly visible on the AIM Solo. Pain.
Lap 3: FLYING. This is, by AIM data, the best I have EVER driven the combined sectors from Keyhole(T2) to Carousel(T14). At Carousel, I lock the inside front, which lead me into a spiral. I attempted to "make up for it" with more throttle than possible, a bit earlier than possible, which leads to a 4 off and session DQ. (which turned into an entire day ruiner due to oil down from T2 to pit entrance in session 4 after I missed #2 and #3 to repair my front splitter)

I missed session 2 and 3 while driving back to Tarmac to cut another splitter. Session 4 was ruined by the Thunder race(which also got cut 15 minutes short due to an extreme number of "incidents" and an oil down situation that stretched from T2 to pit entrance.... So, I leave with a big, fat "what could have been"

Sunday was Pro Course, and I ain't touching Samed's National Championship lap record.

doward 10-20-2021 11:42 PM

I put the black Singular endplates on at Mid Ohio to balance the extra inch of splitter in NASA ST spec vs GLTC spec.
that started a wave of adding black stuff.

CCP doors: pulled 50lbs off the car in an hour.
9LR headlight blanks: pulled 4lbs off the car in about 3 hours over two days.
splitter paint and 2 new mounts: no weight reduction but much more structural integrity and appearance.

I didn’t speak much to the 15x8.5 Hypergram much, but they fit around my TSE 11.75 Dynapro bbk and make the 205/50/15 R7 exactly fit the maximum NASA section width template for cars below 2400lbs.

I think he pulled @afm levels of troll and did a fake carbon fiber wrap on what looks to be real carbon fiber (maybe fiberglass?) doors. Well played either way friend.

CCP composite doors. There is a weave pattern on the inside layer but I’m fairly sure they’re 100% fiberglass.

NCM is awesome. I love the high speed sweepers and this was my first time there with any aero. T5 was easy flat, but I never made it through 17 flat. Haven’t gone super deep yet, but I plan to look at my TT6 record data and compare t5 min speed to TT5 record since I was on the same tire both times( the exact same set of tires a year apart)

The lack of consistent seat time is killing me, both mentally and in my mistake quantity and cleanliness.

I set a new TT5 record, qualified on ST5 pole with a new unofficial record(Race class lap records must be done in a race). DNF race 1 and towed home Saturday night with another dead bottom end. This time the Jdm junkyard one I bought in socal when with 949and that I’ve had under a dusty shelf for like 4 years. 2022 will probably be k24z3 powered.

2:19.492 TT5 record
2:18.7 rolling lap
2:16.2 optimal lap
2:19.9 single lap ST qual

I really want to get sub 2:18, as I think that’s the true pace of the current car and I think a k24z3 swap, 150lbs of ballast and 225/45s would still let T5 be flat and pull out of the slow digs way better on more tire and more torque. A real 2:16.9 is probably possible in xT5.

NASA TT5 Lap Record: NCM Oct 2021 2:19.492

Same 2250lb/140avg, 205R7 on 8.5" splitter/wing build i've been running. Literally nothing new for NCM except CCP doors and more ballast to compensate.

This is the first flying competition lap of the weekend, just trying to replicate the 2:19.439 from Warm Up that put me 8th of 28 in TimeTrial grid.
I did a 2:18.7 rolling lap and compiled data of my best 3 laps of the weekend: TT WarmUp: 19.439, TT#1:19.492 and ST5 Qualifying: 19.9 says a 16.2 is "optimal"

Full disclosure, not a great lap by my standards. I am giving up a tenth in about half the braking zones(there are a bunch) and later in the day T5 was full throttle all the way through. NCM is tough being a ~2:30 laptime with 3 minute warmups/cooldowns. Just not enough cracks at a clean/fast lap in a 15 minute TT session, so it requires a bit of reserve.
In our "Lightning"/small bore race qualifying, I literally only got 1 flyer. Most TT sessions I am lucky to get 3 chances at something traffic-free.

Maybe its the track, maybe it was me just having an off day, but I am WAY less decisive/aggressive/intentful with my inputs in this video. Smooth, yes, but I really think the car's current potential is 16-17s. This especially hurts with the hindsight of a seized/dead engine in Race 1 ending the weekend early.

doward 01-26-2022 02:46 PM

Better late than never. Apparently I never posted this here.

My Personal Best Mid O Pro Course lap is 1:36.988.
Unfortunately, I don't have video, only data. So this is video(and audio) of a 37.2 with a coupe mistakes with the 36.9 data overlaid. video is GLTC qualifying. Data is GLTC Race 2, lap 3 "battling"(drafting) Andy Smedegard. ;)

Hoping you plan to weigh the Z3 with the new oil pump/pan/adapter plate once those arrive? As it sits the chances of it being lighter then an equally equipped BP look slim.

shuiend 02-11-2022 12:29 PM

Wait is the BP motor really only 200lbs? I always thought they were heavier.

emilio700 02-11-2022 01:24 PM

Other variables:
Starter
Alternator
K trans adapter plate
flywheel
Intake manifold
4:1 header vs 3" down pipe

Plus the Kpower engine bits. I didn't weigh ours.

doward 02-11-2022 01:46 PM

Yea, im either staying near the same net weight, or gaining weight with the swap, but thats fine. I use the max allowed 250lbs(300 for 2022) of ballast and would love to add more raw power to match my new heavier weight. I'm also adding a fire system alongside.

Starter is the same
Alternator similar enough
Kpower trans adapter plate is a significant net gain vs zero adaptor required.
Kpower flywheel is significantly heavier, plus a heavier 1.8 clutch. I had a super lightweight SPM 1.6 flywheel and unpsrung 1.6 puck clutch.
Kpower Intake manifold might be lighter than the two piece BP ones.
4:1 header vs 3" down pipe is the only obvious reduction.
Balance shaft delete is a reduction from a stock K24z3, but still most likely a heavier bare longblock than the BP. I dont think a balance shaft weighs 23lbs

OEM RSX ecu and the Kpower harness.
Restrictor plate and cable throttle.
OEM TSX injectors, pump gas.

bimmerboy 02-11-2022 09:16 PM

Some budget tips…. a PPA ECU out of a 2002-2004 CRV auto will work, $55 at pull a part. Hondata says it has to be a CRV manual but mine is an auto ECU and works fine.

Also, cut the throttle cable at the pedal end and use one of these.
https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/...E&gclsrc=aw.ds

For the fuel line I used Dorman EFI connectors and BMW injector hose (8mm ID). The BMW injector hose is Kevlar reinf and I used injector clamps. It’s more flexible and less expensive then -AN lines and has survived in my e36 track car.

doward 02-11-2022 09:38 PM

Solid. Thanks.

I’ve got both an RSX and an auto CRV ecu, along with engine harnesses already. Bought a big box o stuff in a partial trade for my last known-good BP shortblock, before I had a plan formulated and honestly, still don’t have the plan absolutely nailed down.

Progress is basically non-existent. I am waiting on KPower.

I'd like to gut and paint the engine bay, but have been lacking the motivation.

I got the Mazda Motorsports subframe gussets welded into a 90k mile known-good NB2 subframe. That will be the one I install during the swap.
Also, I have been looking for an OSGiken and finally found one, so thats cool. Maybe I'll have time to wrench on my own car again soon.

Progress has happened.
It took a looong time. I knew it would. I contemplated giving up and taking a step back to just DE/TT the BRZ for a while and selling the rolling chassis and my trailer, but I waited it out.
I'm pretty excited now, as about 95% of the parts are on hand.

I am still waiting on two items from KPower, and need to order a couple OEM cam/crank trigger wheels, intake manifold studs, and a few other tidbits, but I have enough here to get some prep done.

That prep started with finally cleaning the engine. With the wait, motivation to prep the chassis or engine was super low. So small things I should have started 7 months ago are still at the top of the list:
Pros for the long wait:
Kpower adapter harness is now a production item
Kpower oilpan v4?
Kpower intake mani v3?
Kpower throttle body v2.
Hydraulic release bearing is pretty dialed by now.

I also had the downpipe shipped straight to ceramic coating. It is going bronze to match my JDL pieces on the BRZ, as I really liked how that turned out.

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...40528ad284.jpg
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...91da4e41fb.jpg

Choices driven equally by my "80/20" build plan and budget, as well as new NASA ST/TT class penalties resulted in a cable driven KPower 74mm throttle body and Acuity B series throttle position sensor:
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...b2640a888a.jpg

The new single piece, cast, front timing cover:
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...2ced3e1ff7.jpg

...and the intake manifold now has flats post-machined on the exterior of the flange for hardware. Studs were breaking pretty dang often for anybody racing on z3 swaps.
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...811a3004db.jpg

Something I'd had on my list for a year now was to lean the radiator forward and do a new hood exit duct a'la Corvette C5R. The various BP problems kept delaying that, so nows a good time as any with the engine out..

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...7823fb8ca4.jpg
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...4c1958a30d.jpg
The brackets for this are prototypes and will probably not see production.

Arca_ex 07-01-2022 01:31 AM

I like the radiator lean, I'm doing the same thing. Not sure if I'm going to seal the radiator exit to the hood though but definitely thought about it.

doward 07-19-2022 09:45 AM

Progress has happened. I'm waiting on cam trigger wheels before I can seal it up though.

Also, i've stalled out on the engine management side.
1. I can't seem to find a dealer that will honor the discounted $400 + shipping(two ways for board modification) KPro4 upgrade price for an ECU that is already reflashed.
2. Also also, Hondata just raised the price of KPro4 to $795 + core ECU + shipping(two ways for board modification)
Hondata is no longer 'substantially' cheaper than going to a Haltech, so I am currently battling this scope creep snowball effect. I could probably sell my two honda ECUs and harnesses to cover the spread up to the Haltech 1500.

Not pictured, but I got the water pump housing reinstalled and also mocked up the OEM fuel rail and injectors.
Oil pump swap is done, pan is sealed, engine is timed, with a new chain, guides, and tensioner.
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...dc0bbe4ee7.jpg

I still need to swap to the gusseted NB2 subframe, remove/cover the ports on my depowered steering rack and pull the mazda clutch hydraulics out.

bimmerboy 07-19-2022 02:27 PM

I wanted the Haltech. But the custom harness from Bluegrass at the time was $2k at minimum spec. A GLTC guy I know with a yellow Miata said he spent $5500 on all his Haltech stuff and he already had the 1500. Not really sure what else he has but it’s a nice electronics package.

Wingman703 07-19-2022 02:55 PM

Buy MS3 for ~$1200
Build your own engine harness for ~$300
Boom, better standalone control then Kpro for(probably?) less money then Haltech.
This also assumes your comfortable wrangling electrons but... It's not that hard to do/learn.

Yea, this is the research phase im in currently.

As irritating as another $500 is towards Hondata, the actual total for Haltech is going to eclipse my hondata investment 2-3x.

Meh.

MS3 is $1300
Haltech is $1600
KProv4 is $795 + a core OEM ECU.

The recent Kpro v4 upgrade gives Kpro onboard datalogging, ethanol input, protection modes for a/f and oil pressure, 3D 16x20 tables, real-time updates to main tables, etc
I am quickly talking myself out of this "upgrade" as I don't see a ton of benefit to a Haltech(or MS3). The biggest ones being external sensor input for oil temp datalog and drive by wire, but i'm purposefully doing a cable throttle for rules penalties.

It would seem that my long delay in receiving parts has had a couple silver linings in the several hardware upgrades from KPower and the Hondata update.

The datalog works great, and the Kpro has built in bluetooth so I can use my phone ($7 app) to monitor IAT and coolant temps without spending any money on additional sensors and gauges. My in car camera sees the values = data logged!

I’ll send you my Hondata calibration file but the one from Kpro did start and drive! Of course tuner said it was off though.

doward 08-02-2022 07:27 PM

Boxes of parts from Supermiata, CAE, AcuraExpressParts, among others have enabled the next roung of work to begin.
Ceramic coater sent me this, which also adds motivation to be ready FOR it when it arrives.

With the AcuraExpressParts shipment, I can now stop mocking things up and actually finish the cam sensor pulse plate swaps and seal this thing up...

Related carnage.
#4 rod, bearing and piston from my "Last BP Ever" circa November 2021.
I donated it to Midwest Miata Parts as a hopefully-rebuildable core. He tore it down tonight to find this. Apparently the oil pump is also welded shut.

Hello! First I love your car and this thread. I've had it on bookmark since I decided to get a Miata and build it for HPDE and eventual tt/st. I have a question. It's so easy to get any answer you want online so I figure I'd ask someone directly. I bought a 4.3 Torsen for my car that I was going to install as I originally set out for a SM build. But honestly I'm not much of a SM fan lol. Should I still stick with the 4.3 torsen or is there another LSD that's better? Thanks!

Yup, good place to ask.

Even better though (and helps others) is to start a new thread with your question as title. Reason why is people that know the answer and are interested in helping might not be in this thread. By having a title with your question, others years later can search and find the resource.
You're new here so probably don't know that we try to curate the resource :)
Good luck with your project!

Internet Brands nuked "doward" so here I am starting over on new username. Oh well.

Series of events:
1. Ordered KPower swap kit in early Dec. 2021.
2. Didnt receive the full kit until June 2022.
3. 5 weddings and work travel last summer/fall meant I simply couldnt get the car put together in time for any track use, let alone w2w racing.
4. Didnt touch it until after the new year.
5. Now we here.

I've pulled most of the small stickers off. Trying to clean up the livery for 2023, maybe with a not-so-minor revamp.
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...2c5ef0875d.jpg

This is how the shop has looked since ~October after the BRZ did TT5 duty at Mid Ohio and ran its last autocross.
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...fbfda5b5ac.jpg

The Miata is back on the lift now though, and progress is happening.
I no longer need to count grams to try and compete in a 12.5:1 class with a 140whp Mazda BP engine, so some stuff that was pulled in the quest for a sub 2100lb comp weight is being added back in, like headlights.
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...4c41680c40.jpg

I also removed/sold the Trackspeed 11.75 DynaPro bbk in order to go back to OEM Sport brakes to save the BBK penalty in NASA ST5. For some reason I took zero photos of the front brakes and their fancy 2 piece Sport rotors.
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...f3c4205bd9.jpg

Little riv nut repair for the radiator bracket:
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...2957fe6d2b.jpg
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...87f7dcb6e8.jpg

..and finally got my low mile NB2 subframe ready with the MazdaComp gussets.
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...eb766cf28c.jpg
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...ea636305f5.jpg

The engine is about ready to be sealed up, just need to put some holes in the bellhousing and assemble the engine/trans to go in after the subframe gets sqwapped. hopefully progress picks up pace and I have some regular updates in here again.

What on earth do you do for a living to afford 5 wives AND w2w racing??? ;)
In seriousness, was wondering what was happening with this car. Can't wait to see it return and tear up ST/GL again.

Just at the point on the millennial timeline where the second batch of better-late-than-never weddings all occurred the same year. JK, it was mostly Covid delays and reschedules of 2 or 3 and natural life cadence of 2.

I do tend to go on these long 4-6 month racecar-abstinence breaks though. They're healthy.

How I feel / why I only aim to race 2-3 times a year. Have watched too many people around me burn hot and then leave the sport/scene entirely, which kinda sucks to see, but oh well.

currently on one of these breaks myself. the car did great on its last outing at Road America and now its sitting without me touching it until spring. Feels nice to step away every so often honestly...

look forward to seeing progress reported here!

Working in spurts as life allows, progress has been slow.
At more than one stage I found a small/cheap part missing from my shipment from kpower that stopped all progress until a flurry of emails were sent and a part arrived only to wait for the next calendar opening. That has been frustrating.

Dropped the loaded subframe out of the car and had the freshly painted and gusseted one ready with the driveline. Supe thankful for the lift and shop space for this combo-step.

Not sure yet how i'll mount my splitter/undertray now that the oil pan blocks the front edge of the subframe. I have an idea for a "Z" bridge/clip/extension on the back of the splitter/tray that can sneak up and hang on the subframe like before.

Clutch hydraulics done. We did have to cut the end off the pin to shorten it as the instructions say is a "possibility"
While I was in there, I relocated the prop valve onto the reshaped OEM bracket. That gave me a spot to mount the clutch slave bleeder as well, which looks nice and tidy.
Radiator in, coolant lines beginning to take shape.

Need to order another batch of new honda/acura parts/sensors that I missed last time before going much further, but the light is beginning to shine at the end of the tunnel.

If you start getting crank sensor faults at high rpm that result in limp mode, it’s because of the connector. I bought the kpower engine harness and a new Honda crank sensor. The aftermarket pins in the connector are just slightly too big. Solution for me was to depin and very very gently squish the female pin so that when it goes into the male pin, it kinda goes on hard. No more limp mode ever since. Got this info from 3/4 midget racers that use K24s. Kpower said the connector was good but I knew something wasn’t right. Confirmed from midget guys.
