Need to get caught up!

Its April and the car has already done three days on track, two back to back weekends and all I did was add oil and PUMP gas! What an awesome change of pace from the last couple years.

The first of which was a Sunday only HPDE with AutoInterests at Mid Ohio. The first "public" day on the new pavement. WRL was here a week before, but thats an endurance racing org.
I ran 2 sessions on 245/40/15 Falken RT660 on 9.5" as Gridlife GLTC and general 200tw street tire practice. I've havent driven a Miata on track on street tires since "Taxi" on BFG Rival S for SuperLapBattle 2018?
Then 2 sessions on my old-DOT-but-only-1year-since-first-heat-cycle 225/45/15 Hoosier R7 on 9.5"
Then ended the day back on the RT660s.
I was super rusty, was only a handful of tenths faster on the R7s, basically a seat time/re-acclimation day, no real testing work done.

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...49b2b13045.jpg
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...929818b440.jpg

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...75e350be47.jpg
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...6f34020ca8.jpg

In prep for NASA I did find that both right side lower control arms had slipped, which could/does explain some of my handling complaints and lack of pace at the DE day.

The K24 is also still messing with me mentally. I've been struggling to wrap it out over 7400rpm after so many years(a decade?) of racing BP4Ws that I'm just hardwired to shift before 7800rpm. The balance shaft delete vibrations are so not-normal to me. I also did my first two events, last august ST4 and two weeks ago HPDE on the Hoosier R7 detune. I got so used to that ~185 peak/178avg power level that switching maps and gaining ~15whp was not even noticeable.

I tried a max power map, no splitter, small tire credit(226mm tire while over 2400lbs), 1.6 category(Toyo RR) credit, 2450lb build this month. Went slower than I did in august, even with a repave and a new class record being set ahead of me on the podium. Toyo RR are no bueno. These are 225/45/15 RR on 15x9 +35 Rota Grids
I did bring home two 3rds out of a contingency paying "full" class of 5 and a 2nd in the new Time Trial Target class(most consistent two laps of of your two fastest sessions). Moral victories...

So the plan is to slap my new 4.77 OsGiken in, cut my restrictor plates and get back on a dyno for an attempt at a ~180 average whp flat tune.
That will let me run 245/40/15 Maxxis Rc1v2(which is the fastest of the 1.6 category tires. The same map will let me run pretty light for GLTC in June.
I also have an AIM MXM and a SmartyCam here, ready to install. I hope that big bright display telling me im short shifting will help me not short shift...

Is it really just going to be a very specific GLTC spec thing, or did you abandon it in favor of the ugly but functional airdam?

TEEHEE! :p

It is very specifically illegal in 5.
It is legal, but penalized in 4 due to the "canards"
It is legal, but penalized in GLTC for the same reason, but GLTC is a class for much bigger/heavier cars on 255-305mm 18" tires and has a written rule about cars that look cool get more stream time, so...

So, it WILL make an appearance in GLTC in June(alongside a bbk and maybe some V8R FLCAs) which means it might just stay on the car for ST4/TT4 in August.

doward 04-30-2024 01:29 PM

So, the ruleset has moved on from Hoosier. NASA has iterated into the required maths to properly hinder/disincentive their "requirement" to be competitive. In ST5/TT5 it really has become possible to win and set records on something other than Hoosier R7s. Hoosiers are right there, and arguably still the preference for an ST_ car due to long race heat soak, but the Maxxis RC1v2 seems to be the hot ticket for cars with enough power to take the big 1.6 tire category credit. Aero still wins, splitters seem to be very much 'worth' the penalty still.

The car that reset the Mid O Pro record that was set during the 2019 Championships was a 2nd gen GR86.
255/40/17 RC1
17x10
OsGiken lsd
SPL FLCA (The arm is allowed for free with last year's power creep rules adjutsment, but the SPL part in question is all spherical, so Jimmy takes the extra .2 penalty. He gains some cheeky roll center correction too though)
A-arm
Splitter, diy plywood
Zebulon wing
longtube 4-2-1 header, e85, detune for flat power.

emilio700 04-30-2024 02:10 PM

Sorry if it was implied and I didn't get it, but what tire was the Mid-O TT5 record GR86 on?

doward 04-30-2024 02:10 PM

I ran last weekend on a "missile" build. I removed my splitter, removed my Hoosiers, went to a 1.6 category Toyo RR, AND downsized them (225/45/15 when I am allowed 245/40/15)to take the "small tire credit" at the lightest possible weight breakpoint for that credit. All in order to remove my 60% TPS detune and run my full power map, gaining over 20whp.
I think the sheer quantity of compromises was too much for the power to cover, as even my AIM theoretical best lap possible would have been over a second off the new record, and only matching my previous PBs set on Hoosier R7s. Terminal velocities were only up a mph or 2. 128 vs 126 on the 205/50/15 and 146whp GLTC setup. I have done another 36.9 on 225/45/15 hoosiers in nasa TT detune spec but that was only a 125mph terminal. Top speeds all in different conditions, one with a tow, etc. Miatas hit a brick wall up top and their speed comes from lateral grip. Building a missile miata is stupid. Dont do what i did.

I drove a 1:38.001 according to transponder/timing and scoring.
I drove a 138.124 according to AIM
I rolled a 1:37.640
Theoretical best of a 1:36.8, which would have only~tied what i did in August last year, and in GLTC in 2021.
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...6588bde1a7.png
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...3e7d55e93e.png

If I replicated the big rc1 + splitter formula that jimmy ran by adding weight and only doing a slight detune for flat power, It would look like:
- 245/40/15 RC1 on 15x10 (~$1900)
- 4" splitter
- add another ~130lbs of ballast
- go spend a couple more hours on a dyno.

1. Status Quo. 2450lbs, 187avgwhp 225 RR, no splitter (how I ran it last)
2. Record replica 2567lbs, 186avgwhp 245 RC1, + splitter + ballast
3. Add only aero. 2530lbs, 186avgwhp, 225 RR, + splitter + ballast to cover.
4. Add only tires. 2493lbs, 186avgwhp, 245 RC1, no splitter + ballast

The extra .1 ratio comp weight chart credit from 2450lbs to 2550lbs is worth 8.5whp when combined with the 100lbs of ballast from 2450 to 2550lbs.

This all gets cloudier when I know I would rather drive a zero-ballast car with a splitter on hooisers. Thats an ST4 car, which gets a free BBK and allows my Garage Vary bumper. That makes it much easier to slot into GLTC 1-2x/year with just a tire change and some ballast...

Kswap pan makes the old front-lip-of-the-subframe mounting of splitters much more difficult, enter the cheap/lightweight solution: https://jspecparts.com/products/na-n...itter-supports

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...ddf204ce08.jpg

I also cut up the old alumalite splitter that got ripped off the car to act as a mockup undertray. This will now template my rear edge shape, mounting hole locations and tire clearance for a fresh alumalite splitter or undertray to be cut to follow either the inner lip of the GV bumper, or 3" exposed if I drop the mounts down an inch to act as a splitter.
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...51df218cc1.jpg
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...4a87b5e3d8.jpg

Having the undertray slotted inside the lip of the bumper also helps support the weight of the bumper and reduce the headlight gap.
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...1f7d275991.jpg

Also pumped to get a 4.78 geared OSGiken diff back in the car. I had one way back in the PTE days and loved how it transformed the car. Sold it for Supermiata S2 prep(4.3 Torsen that is still in the car today)

Love the updates, keep them coming.

doward 07-03-2024 09:30 AM

Welp, lets get this back up to date!
The NASA ST5 no-splitter trashcan bumper *might* have seen its last usage. However, i crafted a new radiator duct and did NOT repurpose the one that fits this flat-front airdam and oem bumper half. So here is one more shot of that setup that has surfaced since the events prior...
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...98578e2cb6.jpg

First step was to slap the bumper on so I could gaze at the combined hotboi of the ModeloDrive "GarageVary-ish" bumper and the Rota Grid "Teehee37s"

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...554befd506.jpg
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...2e07bae1b5.jpg
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...c474210876.jpg

Then, off came the Toyos. I hope I never have to drive on them again. For sale, lightly used, super low miles, only driven on weekends...

In went the 4.77 OSG:
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...0f43a11348.jpg

...and then splitter fabrication could begin.
First step was to square off/level the bottom of this bumper:
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...2fedef273a.jpg

Then my alumalite mockup undertray was transferred to plywood, the mounts lowered an inch and the too-large-for-now splitter temporarily installed for the first of eleven times on and off the car.
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...4540f507fb.jpg
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...04d5a22944.jpg

I very breifly considered following these bump outs on the sides, but decided that having a splitter molded into the bumper, plus the canards PLUS an additional 3" of 'real' splitter might be too far into the grey area foe me. So I stuck to a constant radius for the leading edge.
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...a6738eb4af.jpg

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...1178e8fc78.jpg

The sides of the splitter were cut flush, this is a w2w racecar after all and also not a bleeding edge competitive one in either class at this point, so the 2.5" of surface area were sacrificed for keeping everything inside the track width.
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...486882db46.jpg

Radiator blockoff panels mocked and trimmed.
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...cc381c6e9c.jpg

new duct was arts-and-crafted:
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...4ed4f2729b.jpg
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...d4c86c2a4e.jpg

Splitter got some rustoleum:
Also pictured is my previous Supermiata Crossflow. I sent a 12" sawzall blade through the core while trimming out more of the front core support to make this new rad inlet duct more of a square... Luckily SPM had them in stock and I caught Ed before Fedex overnight pickup deadline. This was Tuesday night:
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...5a5c2d45d6.jpg

New radiator installed on wednesday, and everything could go back on for the final time!
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...edb45f458e.jpg

extra little airdam thing to cover that front bumper curl shape.
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...c56a83f032.jpg
Proof of legality, GLTC is a 3" maximum exposed blade.
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...97adc7ed05.jpg

doward 07-03-2024 09:38 AM

Then it was again time to stare at it like a showcar.
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...743bed7270.jpg

New stickers.
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...d5c2961c70.jpg

loaded up. It is pretty weird going to the track with no 'rain tires' and no "B" tires or scrubs. 200tw racing is wild.
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...83f83745f3.jpg

Delivered. Also, peep the new Supermiata hood art. (it didnt stay on very well, this carbon texture vinyl is tough stuff and the hood sees way more airflow than the doors do)

Its great. We've put ~6k miles on it in about 18 months. Lots of learning about RV maintenance and im glad the 36k mile 6.0L drivetrain is the last thing we have to worry about. Lots of fresh water lines, fittings, a sink faucet, water pump, generator rebuild/tuneup, etc...

I still want an enclosed trailer to go along with it and have lined up first rights of refusal on a buddies.

I normally do long wordy race weekend summaries.

This event was just to enjoy being racing again. I knew i;d be midpack, and I was. Qualified right at the A group/B group split and started Race 1 on the front row. Went backwards every race due to the car pulling timing due to air in the rear outlet from my radiator swap wednesday night. Oh well. Still had a blast.

I'm also feeling more and more confident in the swap. Dont want to jinx it though.

Next event currently planned in NASA Mid Ohio in late August for my annual birthday race. I would like to find a test day or HPDE between now and then though.

P2, front row for Race 1B.

After owning the much larger Class A setup (and quickly learning large RV life compromises and maintenance joys), a shorter more mobile Class C setup similar to yours with an enclosed hauler is on the agenda for family track outings. Glad to hear it's working out well for you and nice updates overall!

Meh. Its less exciting than you think. 8100rpm with a 4.77 looks very similar to 7200rpm with a 4.3, regardless of the BP4W vs K24.

Also, I only have video of practice and I was being extremely timid. You'd really only want to see the qually laps and maybe race 2, but I need to work on camera placement/settings. I slapped it right onto the mount from my gopro, but form factor and the adaptor raised the actual lens quite a bit.

Its a corrective math issue. I absolutely love it, but again, i have an extra ~1000rpm compared to a BP.
The OSGiken is magical, as they always are.

The splitter took a beating this weekend at Nelson Ledges and bent both of my mounts. The mount damage allowed the splitter to flap up and down quite violently and resulted in a black flag and an early load up to go home since I did not have the arts and crafts materials with me to fix it.

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...272774eb47.jpg
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...0acc916c04.jpg

.

The fix for the next event is a couple simple front cables. I will be building a new splitter with yet another mounting method this winter. The K oil pan makes this quite a bit more tricky, but I have a plan to get back to a subframe shelf lip mounting method.
This shot of the underside shows how much of the blade is just hanging, cantilevered out front. I am not really surprised it started flapping around once the mounts got bent enough to let air sneak around it.

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...599422f0a9.jpg

I was also able to get the oil cooler on. These are the lines and mounting method/brackets from my BP setup, but with a new Mocal thermostat outlet plate and a brand new Setrab core.

This may be helpful reference, but I made a "shelf" bracket off the steering rack bolts that worked quite well with the kswap pan. Worked great for me for years just resting the splitter on it like a lot of factory subframe guys have done for forever. I removed it last year once I added Professional Awesome quick release mounts instead.

Do you have a SendCutSend file or anything youd share with me?

Midtenn 08-21-2024 03:55 PM

As a former hose routing engineer, I am triggered by your oil cooler hose routing.

Edit: I also recommend the Susa live swivel hose ends for hoses with one end mounted to the engine and the other end mounted to something fixed (oil cooler). Helps to prevent the hose end from loosening up due to engine torque and hose movement.

HAH! Yes, me too. I didnt take the time to shorten the already really short line that goes to the top of my cooler. The other one kinda has to wrap around the fan because both outlets would foul eachother coming off the outlet plate otherwise.
Again, making due with what i had on hand without opening and shortening the lines that already existed. This was a retrofit, not a from-scratch install.

Thats actually the exact fitting used, the base locks to the cooler core and the hose can swivel freely. Their lengths just happen to keep the hose off the accessory belt and out of the way of the fan airflow.

Edit: I see they have a straight version too. Two of those would fix my routing quite a bit as well.

Those arent my design, they're a prototype set and never made it to a public product.
With the K, they introduce the problem of the rad cap no longer being the high point. With a BP, the rad cap is/was still the high point.
So, if they now require a surge tank or inline fill point, they could be even lower and more slanted, so theyre a bit of an imperfect solution as-is.

Just because I love you all here on MT (..and definitely not related at all to the fact this is a hyper limited market part that next to nobody except a few of us kswap crazies would ever want or need), here you go :likecat:

Should cost you <$30 through SCS if you make it from 0.125" 5052

With the K, they introduce the problem of the rad cap no longer being the high point. With a BP, the rad cap is/was still the high point.

Gotcha, thanks for the response.

NASA Mid Ohio Aug 2024: A birthday weekend tradition now. 36 years old. OOOF

I've loooooong dreamed of driving a miata like this:
-zero ballast(2297lb with driver)
-full power map(~207 peak, 196 NASA average)
-225/45/15 Hoosiers
-6/4.77 OSGiken
-splitter/wing
It was awesome. Highly recommend.

In this config, my car actually fits into NASA ST4/TT4 pretty well. I would be allowed another canard, aftermarket brakes, sphericals, and a much bigger splitter, but this is much more of an *actual* xT4 car than I ran a year ago for shakedown.

Supermiata OSGiken installed. 4.77 gear. Still behind a 6 spd. New gearing and first time with an OSG since 2016!
Splitter rods worked an absolute treat. Never heard a scuff, never felt a flutter, perfect. The front end is definitely way more fragile and harder to load/unload, but worth it so far.
Oil cooler worked an absolute treat. My fear of human error and cross contamination of the oiling system were unfounded and I am now 50:50 on successful oil cooler debuts without blowing an engine.
AIM MXm worked an absolute treat. I could see coolant temp and rpm again. Still no fuel level or oil pressure/temp, those are all at the top of the winter improvements list, along with brake pressure and more aero tweaks.

I never once felt like the ECU pulled timing or that the engine lost power late in a session. Many sessions went by with my fastest laps being 6, 7, or 8, partly because these 225/45/15 Hoosier R7s are DOT dated 2019 from contingency winnings pre-covid...

Photos in nearly chronological order:

I played around with some spat ideas. I almost went ahead and riv-nutted a much smaller version of this to the rearward face of the fiberglass bumper, but opted to shelve it and do bigger, nearly full fender liner spats out of HDPE later.

VR1 20w-50 makes this motor a whole lot quieter and smoother. Or *fresh* oil does. Either way, only the second full fill since i dumped the initial startup oil like 16 months ago.

1:35.0 for the 'gram.

On sunday after it got hot I drove my buddies new Neon project to a 1:42.9, 42.8 rolling, 42.6 theoretical. It was a blast. I really, really enjoyed it. Mostly for the sheer change of pace, FWD, open diff, no aero and there is something about just wringing the neck of something slower than you are and being able to extract "all" of a car's potential.
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...2263a7b053.jpg

The neon gave me lots of thoughts/ideas. I have long theorized a FWD sedan/wagon in NASA's old PTE rules for the credits given to driveline and body shape....xT6 no longer gives the 5 door credit, but FWD and 18:1 is a really cheap way to have alot of fun...

The payoff:
My new personal best laptime: 1:35.0.
I drove better on Sunday, but couldnt outpace conditions and heat cycles.
On Sunday I ran 5th gear from T1 up to keyhole to save that shift and also had all of Saturday under my belt with the OsGiken. The car feels a smidge tight, but not as tight as it looks in this Saturday morning video.

Ironically, the car has been more successful in 4 than it was in 5. That is solely due to the competition levels in the classes. The car, on paper, is a better 5 car than 4 car, but it is soooo much fun to drive in 4 with full power and front aero and on good tires...

A NASA instructor at Road Atlanta back in the day had a Sentra with a Nissan V6 shoehorned into it for some TT class and he stayed on the podium consistently. FWD on track is a different animal.

Looks great in that Mid Ohio video! Really sweet gearing too.

How are the oil temps now with that cooler behind the rad?

Posted for sale.
https://www.miataturbo.net/miata-par...t4-st5-109845/

I dont need to sell it, but I once again feel the annual season-wind-down urge to not make another several thousand dollar reinvestment into 'progressing' this car to the next level.

*IF* I was to keep it, i'd be focusing on the following:
-Install the Radium VTA Competition Catch Can solution ive pieced together. Dual inlets, drained back to the engine. All hardware acquired, just need to make time.
-Remove the inline mechanical fuel pressure gauge and replace the remaining fuel soft line. Gauge is broken and it feels like a liability risk.
-fine tune the 5th gear gate on the CAE
-15x10 wheels for permanent/full time 245/40/15 running
-FIA rain light
-install driver's side headlight, wire both(+FIA light) to a switch
-Finish the restrictor plate project and get a solid detune map built for NASA ST5/TT5
OR
-Make the whole jump to ST4/TT4 with a new 4" deep splitter and install the TSE 11.75" Wilwood Superlite BBK I have on the shelf.
