Default Prepping for turbo build

Sort of just making a thread because I can't stop thinking about my Miata build. For now the main purpose of this thread will be to add pictures as I buy parts, and get opinions and ask questions as I plan everything out. I will be searching and reading as much as possible... but as we all know sometimes even if the answer is out there, it's not always easily found by searching. Hope not too much flaming occur's

I finally decided on my plans last night after talking with my Fiancee. My plan prior to the Miata build idea, was to buy a new/slightly used Wrx. I previously had an 08' but sold it to buy our house. Anywho... we decided she would get a new car (Chevy Cruze Not sure why she is so dead set on getting one) I will be taking over her freshly paid off (will be as of July 2013) 09' Corolla for my DD and parking the Miata at my work, where I conveniently have keys to the building which has a nice 2 post lift, my tool box filled with any tools I need, and a big *** air compressor.

I have a 91' Miata SNC with only 65,000 miles on it currently. I think it will be the perfect candidate for a turbo build. I have been knocking out any general maintenance just to get everything up to par. The only things left on that list are TB, WP & seals, a new soft top, speedo cable, and beltline moldings. Knocking out the timing belt job in the next couple weeks... everything else I mentioned will come eventually.

Parts will start to pile up after Christmas. I will be using my bonus from work, sick time pay-out, and some X-Mas $$ to buy my Manifold & Downpipe. I have my heart set on ARTech for the manifold/DP... I think these will be the first 2 pieces I throw cash down on. We are skipping out on the big honeymoon, so more monies for Miata build and Cruze down payment! All of the additional parts will start to pile up in the summer. The fun really begins once the Corolla is my DD and I can start to tear into the Miata!

Anyway, I suppose I should throw up some pics of the car, and other related stuff

Garage where I work.. My car & my friends 08' Wrx

Trip to VT with the old Wrx

When I first bought it at the end of July 2012

Leaky leaky ...

Better!

I make custom gauge pods for 08+ Wrx's... So I decided to mock one up for my car

Wish I had waited to do the clutch AFTER I decided I was going to go the build route...

Looks like a great start to a nice build. Sounds like you have quite the wife too.

Thank you sir! Yeah i'm definitely lucky! She knows how bummed I was to have to get rid of the Wrx and know's how I was itching to get into something a bit more powerful. This was really the best solution to keep both of us happy! And honestly I am more excited to build the Miata than I would be jumping back into another bone stock Wrx. It'll be fun to make the Miata into a little monster! Once I have my itch for power satisfied, I will start saving for a better suspension/ wheel set-up and hopefully a hard top!

That or go register an account on the zilvia.net forums, you can get them there for $250-$400.

Oh nice! Is it pretty common that they go up for sale brand new over there?

Yeah, there are new ones close to your deal, and rebuilt or almost new ones I think for those cheaper ones.

Looks like I found the potential first piece of the puzzle! A guy I work with has a set of "like new" 410 DSM injectors... He is bringing them in on lunch and said I could have them for $40! Not too shabby

Ok make that 510cc injectors. Now I just need to find a set of clips off an Evo so I can splice them on later!

Anyone know what the rubber ring's are that came on 2 of them? Will I need to locate 2 more for the missing ones? took one off for reference

Think I might have jumped the gun on these injectors but they were hard to pass up for only $40 from my buddy at work... Apparently after a little research I found out that these are low-impedance injectors, so I will have to run a resistor with them. Also will have to find connectors for them. Oh well I think it will work out in the end lol

Low impedance isn't a problem, lots of guides here on how to fix it. Will they actually fit, I have no idea.

Worst case scenario I sell them on E-Bay for $100 lol thats what they go for on the interwebs from what I have found... So I still make out good on the deal either way! But I do hope they fit... they sorta just fell into my lap this morning lol

Seriously. Do it right. Do it once, profit.

EV1's blow *****. Then you need different clips, then you need resistors, etc etc. its gay

at the very least get some rx8 ev6's that will work better and fit better

I agree 100%. No sense cutting any corners on this because I have just over a year to collect parts before I start putting everything together. Luckily I didn't pay the guy for these injectors... I might just tell him to keep them and save me the hassle of selling them. I could probably make a couple bucks selling them eventually but whats the point.

This topic has been beat to death, but the short version is: EV-1 = sucks (rx-7, OEM miata). EV-6 (8, 7, I don't remember, whatever they are) = OK. The Deatschwerks injectors are of this type. EV-14 (FIC, Injector Dynamics) = teh best.

RX-8 are good ones to get if you want to keep the costs down. After that you have to pay to play. However most people here will tell you to save money and buy some ID-1000s now rather than buying older model ones and selling them once you regret it.
