Once you properly tune your car in every setting, almost none of the base map will remain. I tend to chuckle at people saying "I popped the base map in, did a little autotune, and voila, car runs perfect". While it may run, I'd hesitate to even call it mediocre.

Come tune my car, I don't have the patience for the little things.

I wish I was closer, I'd love to waste a couple hours of your time picking your brain some afternoon with the current configuration. Le sigh.

As of right now I feel like its kinda sorta a waste to put a super developed tune on the ECU for the stock motor, but it is worth it just to work through the settings and learn. I need this "close enough" so that when I put the built motor in the car I can get it started and broken-in in a quasi controlled manner. As soon as the built motor gets broken in and the turbo gets installed, I'm going to heat cycle the turbo parts by driving it to Sacramento.

I'm not even kidding when I say I'm going to have 18psi tune it. We've discussed this several times in the past, I just need to get my shit in gear and get the motor finished and installed so I can set a date. I'm thinking a little road tuning to make sure things are solid and then spend a couple hours at a dyno and see what ALLOFIT looks like with a 6258 w/CNC head and CA91.

I need to stay the course and move forward. Its getting closer and closer to completion and I'm getting really excited.

I finally had to unsub the TSE turbo kit thread, the pics of the housings are making me rage with jealousy. :sad2:

We might get the oil pan done this weekend, and I'll probably get the seals and timing set on the engine as well.

I bought a roll of this stuff: --3M? High Temperature Aluminum Foil Tape 433

2" wide and good to 600ºF. If this shit does not stick to my radiator I'm going to loose my fucking mind. Rather than spend $234/60 yards I spent < $30/5 yards for a partial roll. Checkit: I've bought 3 different types of aluminum tape in the past and the stuff always peels off the radiator tank and ends up looking like raggedy ass aluminum foil. This is why I keep asking you people what specific products you use for this stuff. I keep getting answers like "derp, aluminum tape!" yeah fuckers, its not that easy.

I shall report back with results.

rwyatt365 07-10-2015 03:56 PM

Please do. I haven't found ANYTHING that will stick long-term.

Tasty new timing set covers and bolts. Mmmmm....

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1436632582

Yes, I now have 2x crank seals. I should have just bought a gasket kit rather than trying to hunt down all this shiza separately. Oh well.

I now have everything I need to get the engine buttoned up. Yay! Well, almost everything. Hopefully I can grab the pan and stuff from Gesso on Sunday and borrow the FM seal installer tools from Codrus. Inlaws are in town for the next 4 days so I'm guessing engine will be sealed up by about Weds next week. With some luck the engine will be ready to be installed by the weekend of the 18th.

I can break it in N/A for the week of the 20th and maybe get the turbo installed on the weekend of the 25th. If anything goes wrong, drop dead for the turbo install will be Aug 1st. If the turbo does NOT go in on the 1st, I'm screwed until probably Aug 22nd. I'm out of town for the first 2 weeks of August on back to back conference and then a training so I'm not going to be home to do anything. :(

Man, screwing up my ankle really set me back. I wanted all this done earlier in the summer because I knew July and August were going to be a mess. I'm just have to stay on task and get shit done.

Once the turbo is in and I've got my shit squared away, only then will I contact someone and set a date for dyno tuning.

You can always leave it my place and I can install things. Though I can't promise that I won't install your parts in the Exocet...

EO2K 07-11-2015 04:12 PM

That would be ridiculous though I'm not sure the exhaust would fit. Not like that would stop you ;)

gesso needs a mill!

The equivalent part on my car, TK and I made at techshop, on the Tormach. :)

Mine. Not very big, but most of the stuff I make is pretty small. Add in a rotary table and a vise, and you can make a lot of parts.

Alternate location for oil temp sender, 1/8"NPT. Yes I see the chips, I have not yet cleaned out the pan at this point.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1437144465
Revised turbo oil drain location. Will it clear the AC bracket? No clue, this engine will never see AC so I'm not worried about it.

I don't think you understand exactly how good Gesso is with a TIG. I believe the phrase is "damn good"

Once again, big THANKS to Gesso for burning aluminum last Sunday. :bigtu:

aidandj 07-17-2015 10:51 AM

Pure sex. Once my welder shows up I'm going to start burning aluminum every day.

18psi 07-17-2015 10:58 AM

Great job.

Welding a pan is one of the most annoying and frustrating things ever. The stuff just doesn't like to be welded after years of oil contamination. Geoff did a very clean job.

I had to machine the AC compressor bracket to clear the oil return on this pan, looks like you may have to do the same on yours.

I have the same oil temp bung location and it works well and is out of the way.
Looking nice

He really does do amazing work. Eventually we'll build some charge pipes as well, but I've got a bit before we get to that point.

The last time we did a pan the contamination was really bad, this time it was a lot better. I think it has a lot to do with the porosity with the casting. Also, as soon as he touched the torch to the coolant neck it immediately started smoking and smelled like burned antifreeze. (FYI that's a terrible smell) He still got fabulous results and the neck is perfect.

Fragola -6 AN fittings that seal with crush washers. I friggin' HATE NPT and I'll avoid it whenever possible. Even with the washers I still put sealant on the threads. Hopefully no leaks here!

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1437145595
Here they are assembled. The water neck part has veeeeery little crush washer engagement as we went a liiiiittle aggressive on the thread lead in chamfer. Again, sealed up with thread sealant anyway so hopefully it'll be OK.

Man I hope this fits...

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1437149150
It fits! No contact with the timing cover

I noticed some weird black shit on my lifter shims so I decided to pull the cams and wipe everything down. Then things started to go down hill...

The black stuff is apparently some sort of coating on the cams but I didn't realize this until I had pulled both cams out of the head. This is OK because it allowed me to notice that all the lifter bores were dry. So one by one I pulled the lifters, wiped them and the bores down with Amsoil Engine Assembly Lube and reinstalled them. I then wiped down and lubed the cam journals and went to reinstall the cams. The intake cam went perfectly. The exhaust cam, not so much. I got it in place and realized I forgot to lube journal #1 so I lifted out the cam and it pulled one of the shims off cylinder E1 and E2. These promptly fell down into the head ON TOP OF ONE ANOTHER.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK! :vash:

I couldn't find my feeler gauges so I said fuckit and pressed on. I'm about 80% sure I got them back in the right spot but I need to check them before moving forward. I then re-positioned the cam, installed the caps and torqued them using the pattern and spec in the FSM. It's so nice to have good documentation :)

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1437149150
I made sure to lube ALLTHETHIGNS! on reassembly.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1437149150
Pulled out the torque wrench and the loctite and got the backing plate installed along with the cam gears. E & I baby!

19 teeth like a bauce. The SuperMiata Harmonic Damper is just chilling until I can borrow the install tool from Emilio. Believe it or not, I actually pulled out the in-lbs torque wrench and torqued the timing cover bolts. Its a brave new world citizens.

Go to sleep engine, its time for bed.

Tasks for today:
  • Order another set of feeler gauges
  • Order some -6AN caps
  • Order damper install tool from 949
  • Order valve cover gasket
  • Try to order another temp sender for my VEI gauges.

Priority tasks for tonight:
  • finish cleaning oil pan
  • install windage tray
  • install oil pickup
  • install oil pan

Secondary tasks for tonight:
  • install turbo on block
  • finalize and build turbo oil drain
  • finalize and build turbo coolant lines
  • figure out how I want to get oil into the turbo
