This is awesome. Please document the build, so that maybe i will get a shred of motivation and spend some time in the garage to build my engine too!

ScottyP3821 12-29-2014 11:04 AM

Agreed. So happy you are documenting this in high detail. I wil greatly use this build as a resource down the road

What bolts did you buy to mount the block to the stand?

I know I am a bit late on this, but I use transmission bolts to hold my engines to the HF stands. The one thing I do though is cut the stubs on the arms that attach to motor and stand shorter before putting the motor on stand. I had problems finding long enough bolts locally to not have to cut the stubs.

I'm happy to help! Just don't take anything I say as gospel. I've never done this before and I'm learning as I go. Don't copy anything until its proven to work

I PM'd one of our resident Amsoil dealers here on the forum this morning to order up some Engine Assembly Lube and Break-In Oil. That shit is expensive but this whole mess has been expensive, and I'd prefer not to screw it up by using inferior products. I don't mind spending a little bit more for purpose designed lubricants rather than just relying on internet wisdom.

Also, I'm leaving this here so I don't forget it:

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...1&d=1419882080

My rod journals came out to 1.7695" (remember, +/- 0.0005" if I believe my calipers) so I'm pretty happy about that. I've got a set of $$$ Starrett 0-3" mics on the way so I'll be able to tell here for certain soon enough.

I was like "I'll just use the transmission bolts!" and then I realized the only set of trans bolts I have is holding my 6 speed to my car

But yes, trans bolts would be the ideal setup.

SHit! I forgot I was going to borrow Gesso's mics. Order cancelled! That's a big fat chunk of change I can now save. I still should probably get telescoping bore gauge set.

In other news, Ian has made me all paranoid. I'm not sure if I should call up and rent that torque plate you used or not. :eek4dance

Heh. When I picked it up after boring, Rob and/or Savington was talking about making one, so there might be one available locally. It'd be worth a call before paying $35 or more each way in shipping for the FM one.

Thanks for the tip! I need to follow up with him anyway on my Amsoil order.

Things are still not at the machine shop. Life priorities and job have kept me jumpin'.

Also, does someone have a spare oil heat exchanger nut I can borrow? I can't get the threaded spud out of the block without double nutting the thing, and I don't have a second nut of appropriate size. I'm happy to pay shipping + some nominal fee, and return shipping should you want it back.

Or maybe I'll let the machine shop deal with it.

18psi 12-30-2014 11:16 AM

you can haz my nut (teeheeeeeeeeeeeeee)
priority envelope?

EO2K 12-30-2014 11:24 AM

I walked into that :giggle:

Sure, will PM you address right now. Just so it doesn't end up back at the UPS store

I have a spare one in my garage if you want it faster than UPS.

Well, that got here earlier than expected. Still in the factory plastic wrap too

I was not exactly expecting this, but it has all the stuff for the 01-05 BP6D VVT specs. The clearances I'm looking for on the crank/rods/pistons and that stuff should be the same between the 4W and 6D so I ain't even mad.

On Friday I'm going to talk to the guy here at the office who manages our OCR system and see if he's willing to help me get this scanned in. PDFs are great, but searchable, indexed PDFs are even better

Great to see progress. I eagerly await the day I can come visit you with my princess-mobile in tow and we can compare awesums and drink beers.

G you inspired me to get the 2001 version of that manual. I had looked for such beasts in the past but my google-fu was weak; having that example made it Stronk. Like OX!

I have both the 99-00 and 01 FSM in searchable PDF if the MT.net crew needs a link.

On my third beer of the day of the old year - much wrenching of disassembly occurred today on my car, and pleasing progress was made. This has to be the most overrated holiday of the year and is always an anticlimax, but drinking while wrenching I think makes it pretty righteous.

I really would like a copy of the 99-00 manual if it is possible!!

The 99-00 FSM in your link is slightly incomplete. The first couple pages not in the PDF include this data:

Attachment 238501

The Engine Workshop Manual that contains all the internal specs for the motor is not included in the FSM, thus why I bought one ;)

Something else occurred to me today:
Attachment 238502

Sweet mary mother of jesus! That's right, I have 6.5" of heat exchanges to jam in the nose of the car. Thank goodness I ditched the AC.

EO2K 01-03-2015 10:30 PM

I don't like some of the things I've heard while discussing my engine with the guys at the machine shop. The old dude who did my other 2 motors over the years has retired and I'm absolutely not impressed with the new kid I've been talking to on the phone.

This sucks. Time to go find another shop. I should have just bought a shortblock from TSE :vash:
