I have a nice 1.6 throttle body and an FM adapter plate *cough cough*:giggle:

I should put a for sale sign on my Miata at MRLS and just fish for the highest price I can get.

EO2K 09-02-2014 07:11 PM

Not that anyone cares, but did you guys see Jackson Racing got their Rotrex kit for the Miata through CARB testing? Its not searchable on the ARB.ca.gov site yet, but its executive order# D-700-4 :owned:

Yeah, pretty cool, will probably come with a 5 billion dollar price tag.

Watching this Skunk2 situation is making my head hurt. I'll take that TB as a partial credit and sell you a new one if you'd like.

Thanks man, I appreciate the help especially since I didn't actually get it from you to begin with! I'll be in touch sometime after MRLS, bigger fish to fry at the moment.

I was terribly ill all day but I had shit to get done.

Oil sandwich plate installed with pressure and temp gauge, plus secondary water temp sender on the reroute spacer. Thus, all my spiffy gauges are now working. :bigtu:

For the first time in 2 years I have an undertray on the car again  Maybe that'll keep things cleaner underhood so Jeff won't make fun of me anymore. I started the car on jackstands and discovered a shitload of things vibrating under the nose of the car. I think I got most of them, guess I'll find tomorrow.

I also did my brakes and got the XP8s installed. They need to be bedded and I need to make sure I didn't fuckup the adjustment on the rears (again)

Intake is done but no heatshield. Meh. I insulated the shit out of the crossover tube so maybe that'll help? I have a separate IAT gauge and both the MS3 IAT sensor and the gauge IAT sensor are zip tied under the hood right next to the filter. I'm going to need to VEAL this shit out of my fuel table in the AM, but I needed to do that anyway. I'm hoping my IATs aren't so high that it causes a problem. Guess I'll find out!

hornetball 09-07-2014 01:11 PM

Did that adapter fit with that pressure sensor without hitting the block? Or did you retain your water/oil cooler for clearance?

EO2K 09-08-2014 12:49 AM

Yes sir, I retained the oil cooler/heater and it provided plenty of clearance.

My IAT gauge is within 2~3º of what the MS3 is showing, and I never saw more than 76ºF all day even on track. Oil temp topped out at 238ºF at the end of 15 minutes or so but dropped down pretty rapidly once started my cooldown. Oil pressure was as expected, nothing alarming and still made 35+psi @ idle while at 238ºF. My wideband gauge is displaying voltage again so I need to figure out why it hates me. I was surprised how my brain started equating volts to AFRs without much conscious thought on my part. its still pig rich over 6k but its kinda hard to tune that on the street with any frequency. My other disappointment is the water temp gauge reads 40ºF lower that what TunerStudio is showing me, and both sensors are located in the reroute housing on the back of the head.

Of course, this forces me to question the 238ºF I'm seeing for oil temp (they use the same model sensor for both) but I think if my temps were 278ºF I probably would have lost the motor long ago.

XP8s are awesome, I'm not sure why I didn't do them sooner. I had a little drama heading out of the driveway this morning as I had forgotten to set the pads, so first use of the brake pedal was a little harrowing. Bedding was done on the highway on the way to the track by doing aggressive 75 -> 25 -> 75 -> 25 -> 75 transitions until things smelled bad, then backing off a bit and repeating. While this is probably not how the manufacturer says you are supposed to do it, for me it worked like a champ. My first taste of XP8 came when I punched the brakes coming into turn 1 and the car went "Woahhhhhh!" and dropped me down to next to nothing for speed. Silly momentum car :giggle:

Attachment 238907

XP8 + NT-01 = win. For a 2 year old set of tires that have just been kicking it in my garage, they performed flawlessly.

So much fun. I can't believe its taken me this long to get back on the track. I'm going to need to schedule more track days :bigtu:

Mobius 09-08-2014 05:46 AM

Nice G! I like XP8's. On sport brakes I ran the same set of XP8's for 4 years, along with one season of boosted track days, and they still had half life left on them when I moved to the wilwoods. They are a fabulous dual/triple duty pad when they are happily bedded to the rotor.

Hopefully I can make MRLS next year. That's the goal.

hornetball 09-08-2014 07:14 AM

If you are not running an oil cooler, 278F is a pretty normal track temperature. OTOH, your oil pressure seems to indicate that the oil is cooler than that. Hope you get the 40F discrepancy resolved. MS1s use a 40F offset for coolant temp in the software. Not sure about newer MSs. Maybe related?

Mobius 09-08-2014 11:14 AM

I bet 238 is correct. I have only seen over 250 a couple of times on 95+ sessions last summer with 10psi of boost. So far this year I haven't seen over 240 - the overall improvements to the cooling of the car seem to have had trickle down effects. "A rising rate of overall heat rejection cools all components", as it were.

Rallas 09-08-2014 12:36 PM

Finally we got someone on track with the Mini rotors and dynalites! I am glad to hear the brakes worked well with the XP8's.

What brake fluid did you run?

Where you monitor makes a difference. When monitoring from a sandwich plate, you'll see 20F+ hotter as compared to an oil pan probe.

Same can be said for oil pressure. Monitoring oil pressure at a sandwich plate instead of the OEM block gallery means you don't see the pressure loss associated with the oil filter or (if installed) an oil cooler.

EO2K 09-09-2014 02:10 PM

I guess I should amend my IAT statement... I never saw over 76ºF while moving because obviously the temps start creeping up when you are idling, etc.

Track temps were in the upper 70ºF range all day becausecalifornia

Worked flawlessly with the XP8s. Also, no ducts at this time. I was running deeper into the corners before braking and making people super nervous, but I was also in C with 205 NT-01s and Wilwoods so outbraking other people on summer tires and autozone pads is not exactly an accomplishment. :giggle: Gesso is pretty sure I was able to out brake him in the Exocet (1.8 brakes and mystery FLAPS pads) but he could run away from me no problem everywhere else. I had passengers for all but my first run and I'm probably a little heavier than most NB's with about the same power. I pointed by a bunch of NAs that were in a much higher state of track prep than I and passed pretty much every NC that was in front of me, so I'm happy.

Running ATE SuperBlue because I still have 2 cans of the blue stuff in the garage, though next change will be ATE Type200 amber colored stuff.

After every session we were required to do a "driver download" where our rungroup got together and discussed what happened, what we learned, etc. I thought it was funny when the lead guy (oldschool Spec Miata racer) said "I don't understand why everyone thinks they need bigger brakes with all these fancy Wilwood calipers and giant rotors. The car is completely over-braked from the factory. Just put a set of Hawk Blacks on the stock brakes and you'll be fine."

Yeah, because Blacks are a great dual use pad :crx:

As for the oil temp, I think its probably accurate. I'm still on stock~ish power so that 238ºF @ 76ºF ambient seems legit. I'll order up another temp sender and swap it out and see if the coolant temps make more sense. I cannot remember who had said it, but I've read there were problems with one of the runs of temp senders from VEI, so I may have a bad one. Maybe I'll order a couple.

Yep, this came to mind when I was bolting things together. My grand plan is to relocate both the pressure senders to the firewall with something like Advanced Autosports ~ Oil Pressure Sender Relocation Kit [001-AA-OILR] when I do my turbo oil feed. I just do not like the idea of the sender flopping around on the end of a brass T as with the "traditional" turbo oil source routing. Sure its probably worked fine for quite a few people, but it just scares the hell out of me.

Jeffbucc 09-09-2014 02:19 PM

Is your hot oil pressure at idle seriously 35psi or did I read that wrong? I don't think I see more than 12psi at idle @900rpm.

EO2K 09-09-2014 02:41 PM

Yeah but I'm cheating. Its pre-filter so as Hornet said, does not account for filter loss. Plus BP6D oil pump in this engine so it moves more volume. Its also like a 40k mi on stock/SM rebuild so its in great internal shape. I'm also not stealing oil for a turbo.

This is also the first time I've had a legit oil temp and pressure gauge in the car, and its not like I'm datalogging its just what I noticed. I'll keep a closer eye on it and report back.

Jeffbucc 09-09-2014 02:45 PM

OK that makes a lot more sense. I had a momentary worry for a minute there. Glad things are smoothing out for you man. Sounds like the car did great!

EO2K 09-09-2014 03:53 PM

The car did great and its exactly what I needed to get my confidence level back up. Now that I actually trust the car (for the moment) its time to start getting back on the horse. NCRC is running a bunch of events between now and the end of the year, and there is one event at Thunderhill in October that I'm eyeballing pretty hard. Plus Miata Challenge is running Buttonwillow 13CW in October and Streets of Willow in November.

Of course I may end up doing nothing :loser: but we'll see.

hornetball 09-09-2014 05:11 PM

Your IATs pretty well correspond to Emilio's observations. It's why he never bothers with an air box.

Oh well, at least my NACA headlight inlet and aluminum air box look cool. Always a topic of conversation.
