Default MX5-Cruiser's '90

Hello all,

I bought my MX5 summer 2015. Been looking for a fun car and the roadster part is a nice bonus.

So my MX5 is a 1990 basic car, only option must have been electric windows. No PS or AC, that's how I like it :8

After the purchase I replaced the steering wheel and put an alarm in including central locking.
It soon turned out that the suspension was shot so I ordered a set of HSD Monopro's. Now it's winter and car is inside for major maintanance and upgrades. New brakes, new timing belt, new suspension bushing...
Plans are to turbo it!

Pics!

Testdrive before I bought it

New steeringwheel

HSD Monopro's

Summermode

Car is being worked on, put it high on stand for easy access

Radiator looking worn and tired, also check out the leaky crankshaft seal!

Balljoints, not all of them made it in one piece

Pressing the bushes out

Received new brakestuff

Size upgrade, it's the 1.8 set

PU bushes in

Rear suspension coming together

Cranklockingtool

Seals were really stuck, had to fabricate tool aswell for this..

They needed to be replaced, thats for sure!

After that, new timing belt, waterpump etc.

Brakes where a lot worse than I expected, fronts too rusty to use again, 1 rear calliper had been replaced, thats the one that stayed, other one was too rusty too so replaced that, did the 1.8 brake conversion as well.

Fronts, right, had the 1.8 EBC discs set laying around but now that I've discovered how bad the parts where, which I do need for the conversion...
So ordered a Willwood set

New upper balljoints

Front assembled

Painted the disc centers black, ordered smooth discs because of the smooth Willwoods, wouldn be looking good if the rears are slotted / drilled while the superior fronts are not..

Bit of a nice suprise! K&N filter in original filterhousing, cleaned an oiled that. New radiator is also visible.

Had the front left brakeline made new, hose wouldnt come off. Luckily its the shortest brakeline there is

Installed hood/bonnet lifters

New wheels, ATS DTC 15x7, was not yet planning on that yet but the stock wheels wont clear the new front brakes (weird )

Low weight

Toyo R1-R

Close shave?

Brake hose rear

Wishbones leveled horizontal

Discovered one bumpstop is missing on one of the rear coilovers, that was the cause of banging when coming off certain speedbumps. Also added 5mm preload to the rear, which keeps it from hitting the bumpstops at almost every speedbump.

Looks like a good clean platform to start with, planning a 1.8 swap before turbo?

Not really Seems like a lot of people over here @mt.net do that before FI.. But I'm not looking for extreme power, and the 1.8's are really outnumbered by the 1.6's here in Europe. So parts are also harder to get.

Last winter was most a rust-removal session, left-hand sill had been done before but not quite properly so had to bee done again. Also tackled smaller rust areas:

This one was odd, after the thick box section the thinner part had almost completely rusted though. Fixed it.

Sill before repair

After

Paint is a little orange-peel, something went wrong in the prep-process.. But looks is not priority right now so we'll fix that later. Also put a TR Lane rollbar in.

Gave the framerails some rust treatment and a framerailkit

Also did some engine work, Magnecor leads, AEM wideband, Megasquirt PNP ECU, MAF delete so new airfilter. Slowly building towards forced induction.

LED Headlights, got to get used to the looks but I didnt think it would look this good to start with!

So that was last year, currently I am gathering bits for this winter. New Competition Clutch stage 3 clutchkit and flywheel, Torsen II 3.6 diff. IL motorsport coolant reroute. So it's not too many things going on but when it's all on the car I think it's really ready for turbo! Got some new 550cc injectors ready to go in when the time comes
