MSM, ARTech, Reverant, MOAR BOOST!
so, this will pretty much be my first thread that i am starting. this is my second miata. its a 2004 mazdaspeed miata. my first one was a 99 that i planned on boosting but i ended up trading it in for my current miata.
but who cares about that ****.
i have some goals for this car. and i have the $ to make it happen now. so here it goes. my END goal is 350whp. granted i dont plan on making that kind of power any time soon. my goal by december is around 250.
I am going with an ARTech manifold, downpipe, and 3" exhaust. abe seems like he has his **** together.
I want to get a GT2871r but i cant find a used one for sale yet. i guess im either going to have to keep look or decide on something a little smaller. I want the GT2871r because i wont have to replace it once i build the motor. if i go with something smaller i will have to replace it once i build the motor to make the power i want.
I am going with a Reverant MS2 unit and i believe some FIC 650cc injectors, recommended my rev. so i figure if he loves them, and hes building the brain for them..........i should probably just listen to him. plus hes greek, and so am i.
i already have a big intercooler, cold air intake, and hks ssqv bov. the stock intercooler, obviously is just...well, dumb. its got aftermarket 15 in wheels which is awesome because the stock msm wheels are also dumb. it has an aftermarket adjustable suspension. im not sure on the brand yet but once i start exploring i plan on cleaning everything up and making notes of exactly whats on the car.
as far as i know, everything else on the car is stock.
i have only had this car about 3 months and its already got some bad luck tied to it. ive been hit by two drunk people and ive already gotten pulled over. so in the three months ive had the car, its probably been in the shop being repaired a solid 5 weeks of the 12 weeks ive had it. this is my DD and i will be updating this very often. I am a senior in college and for one of my classes i have to set a goal and achieve that goal by the end of the semester. my goal = my car. so i HAVE to finish it if i want to graduate.
for my class i have to take pictures to document, so this thread will have quite a few pics also. Im at work now but i get off in about an hour and when i get home i am going to update with pics.

ok so I have put my order in with Abe and also with Rev. Now the only three major things I need to deal with include injectors, clutch, and the actual turbo. I like the idea of the gt2871r but its proving to be a relatively hard turbo to find used. Ive checked zilvia and I have not found one yet. It needs to be a t2 flange and i want to make anywhere from 250 - 300 whp. Ive looked into a gt2556 but that seems even harder to find. But I am not sure where to look...
As for the clutch, im probably going FM stage 1. ive read a little bit about it and nobody has anything but great things to say about it. so i figure ill give it a try.

i dont have any real plans to actually build the engine, i just want it as an option if i get bored and have some extra cash. and i would still think that the stage 1 clutch would work for up to around 325ish.

Ask and you shall receive. 18psi is selling me his garrett gt2876r. So that’s the turbo ill be running with Abe’s manifold, downpipe, and exhaust and with Rev’s ms2 units, with FIC 650cc injectors. So it seems to be all coming together.
so i had an off day from work and school which is rare, so i took the opportunity and worked on my car a little.
i washed the car, then i cleaned and polished my headlights, cleaned and painted my intercooler piping, stripped and repainted my intercooler, (last time i was impatient and rushed the entire process, turned out badly. so took this chance to redo it), and some other little things. Also last week, i installed the aux mod so i have an aux port now with the stock radio. great addition for a DD!
here are a few pictures of the evening.
this shows my state of the art paint studio haha
this is after i painted the intercooler and piping.
this is what i used to clean my headlights, and it worked pretty well actually. id always been skeptic about those foams ***** that attach to drills, but it was on sale so i figured id give it a try.
this is how it looks now with the black piping.
and this is what it looked like the next morning. bumper-less
so now its pretty much just a waiting game. ive ordered all the parts and now its just a matter of time before they get here and i can start having some fun. i plan on getting this thing on a dyno sometime after i get this setup running, but 1 idk where the closest dyno is. i think its over an hour away and 2. what kind of numbers do you think i can expect? again Im running stock internals, so i have to do some more research on the limits of the stock internals. from what i have briefly read, they are good to around 240whp? does that sound about right?
anyways, once this setup is going...im going to need some new tires. i hate the tires that are on the car now. they are falkin ziex 512 205/50/15 and they kinda suck. their traction on dry, clean, debris free asphalt is decent but if there is any kind of moisture on the road, they have almost no grip at all. its almost dangerous how bad they are. ill probably end up trying to get som 6uls 15x8 and throw some 225's on the back. (and front).
i just keep telling myself, after this, the car will be done......

The stock internals fail due to torque not hp. The general rule is 250lb/tq, however, this is not a magic number so they may take more or less depending on the particular motor.
Your setup is fully capable of reaching 350 whp so you will be very limited with the internals which is why I am not even going to bother upgrading my turbo and mani until I build my engine because I would rather not be tempted to turn up the boost and find the limits of the engine.
Car looks to be coming along nicely. keep it up!

ok so with that info, what kind of boost pressures do you think will be safe for me to run? i remember reading a thread of sav's that had a very similar build but he had a build motor. so with my motor being stock, this setup would be around 10psi, safely, on the stock motor?
and you think the 650cc injectors would be good all the way up to 350whp?? jw. i dont plan on buying new ones after these, so whatever is the weakest part of this setup will just be the limiting factor of my system. whether it be the motor (which will be the first limiting factor) or if it turns out to be the manifold not flowing enough once im running 325 to the wheels on a built motor.

I could not place a psi number on it as every engine is different and doing so would be irresponsible. I would suggest starting to tune it 8psi limit and after a good street tune take it to a dyno and see where you are at that level. If you are below 250wtq then you can up the boost on the dyno to whatever limit you are comfortable with. I really do not think 650cc injectors will take you all the way to 350rwhp. I think they would probably max out at around 320rwhp.

i was thinking the same thing about the injectors. as for the psi level, i agree. ill probably start off with something modest like 6psi just to be extra safe because i cant afford to have something major break. like i said this is my DD. i need it in order to get to work and school etc.
so basically that is great advice. ill get a good street tune on 6 or 7 psi and then tune it more when i get it on a dyno.

That seems ridiculously conservative to me, but maybe i'm just too newb for this. I have seen quite a few Escort GTs over 300whp with RX7 460s, though. And my Miata did 245whp with 550s with an enormous amount of headroom.
However, i will say that i've never seen an enthusiast group before with so many cars running 1000cc injectors for 300whp or less.

turbo shipped today. ewg shipped today. not sure when the ecu is going to ship or when the manifold, dp, and exhaust will ship.
still need to order the injectors.
but, while i have this downtown, whats some stuff that i can do while i wait that will make the entire install go easier? im taking care of maintenance issues but ive pretty much done it all as of now. replaced all the old cracking vacuum lines. tranny fluid. rear diff fluid. turret fluid. coolant flush. oil change. etc...
what are some productive things i can do while i wait??
