That’s great for 30k miles and a slew of track days! I agree on the valve seals, just one of those things where the work to gain ratio isn’t worth it unless it worsens haha. I have a few of those on my car, don’t ask me what they are

Is the noise rotational or non-rotational? Speed and/or rpm have an edge to in it? I read over the list and couldn’t decide if it sounded rotational or not.

Super sick! Really fun to see you slide the car and hold it a bit. I’m glad you both like the mount!

Glad to see it’s a healthy motor for the mileage and abuse!

Tuned in to know how the track day goes with the new upgrades. I can’t make it tomorrow, but best of luck and have fun!

To me it sounds rotational, and VERY much speed related. I'm still concerned it might be the pilot bearing, but I'll keep ignoring it until it gets worse I guess. I have a rear main seal leak I'd eventually address, but again, hasn't been bad enough to tear into.

Ricardo hooked me up with some tweaks on my map, he's the real MVP even from the sideline when he's not coming out to race! The best thing is that I was motivated to go drive the car, so I did my pre drive tire pressure check and found this!

I am SO SO happy I found this now. It's down in the groove, so I feel OK about patching it with the ole tar strip and glue. I've used these on everything over the years, even motorcycles (don't tell anyone), and never had one failed me. I'm not thrilled about having to plug my brand new rt660 (what, maybe 150 miles on them?), but whatever. Gon' send it!

So the patched tire is holding well. No pressure loss after a spirited drive. Ready for tomorrow! Ricardo's latest revision has the car running better than ever, which has me psyched on it.

Sealed off this intake box, it had a much larger hole than needed for the intake and I wanted better hot/air cold separation. Happy with this.

So you might look at this and say PUT THE CARDBOARD AWAY, NATE. But I've had an idea for a quick disconnect ducktail/longtail for this trunk lid ever since I got this wing. First attempt playing with that idea. I'd make it out of aluminum and use quick disconnects to mount it to the (already trimmed to fit the wing) beater trunk lid. Eventually it would all be body color, as would the wing element itself. Love it or hate it the wing works and doesn't overpower the front aero on the car. Aerodynamically and aesthetically I think it would be an improvement if I make it right.

That's a good idea, Nate.

Also, get the GT6+ running next.

Dude, you’re on a burner this weekend!

Love the look with the longtail. One of my buddies had a longtail fastback on his NB paired with a 9LR big **** and it looked super mean. I think the longtail provides additional drag reduction more so than downforce, no?

All the points regarding the squeak are throwing me for a loop. Sounds like it’s coming from under the hood, still present with engine off, rotational… maybe it’s resonating from elsewhere in the driveline? Does it go away with car rolling, engine off, clutch depressed? Wonder if it could be a trans bearing.

Bummer about the tyre but good that you caught it. I had a clicking sound once, only really noticeable when travelling beside a wall or gutter, never could find anything but never though to check tyre for something and it seemed to fade away with time, but when putting on new tyres found a screw in one tread, the head totally worn off, still sealing the hole though!

Interesting that long-tail ... I'd be interested to see some B2B or other analysis, has any of the CFD people done any work on this or similar? You are definitely changing the airflow under the wing, but how that affects it I have no idea, but some sort of flow or pressure analysis might allow informed guesswork? Some tuft testing would be a good start ...

Re your airbox, thanks I have been plotting something along these lines - you have a lip sitting on the frame rail to seal/secure it? The filter away from the vent in the bonnet?

Yeah, Lightyear is doing some more of these, very tempted as I can partially fund one selling my pristine VR HT, and the car needs a respray anyway. Decisions ...

I've progressed a bit on the idea. See this thread: https://www.miataturbo.net/aerodynam...3/#post1650912

Also, the GT6 is a runner! Though it needs a front suspension overhaul before I drive it much, and now I have a FD project. I'll get back to it eventually, I always keep a few projects in rotation to keep me interested.

My understanding is that the longtail will do a few things on my setup. First, the wing is mounted pretty far back being the street wing, so there's a lot of turbulent air under the wing element, and this in theory helps with that. There's also drag reduction like you mentioned, and if I angle the longtail slightly it could also act as a spoiler.

I do have a weather seal that seals it to the hood, but nothing below it sealing it to the frame rail. I did consider that though, it would be pretty easy to add.

The lightyear and rennwafen fastbacks are what turned me onto the idea. I always thought it would look mean with the longer tail and this wing. Definitely an inspiration or the idea.

I just got back from a work trip to Las Vegas. Bought some twin turbos for my rx7 while I was there, so that was neat. Crazy place.

Anyways, the track day last weekend was great. It took a few heats out there for the brakes to feel decent, I can't say I'm completely thrilled with them yet but I think they honestly need more bedding and another bleed. Pedal never got soft but takes a ton of effort to stop compared to stock, I'm guessing a lot to do with the MC setup. I'll have a better idea of them after the next event. I was breaking them in the first heat, smoked them pretty good (smelled 'em) on the first lap. Then they started working better. I was driving decently hard but moving my braking points back, just like the break-in instructions. Each time I went out they were feeling better, so I have faith they will get a good transfer layer and start working well.

My buddy lost his s2k and went into the concrete barrier on t14, which was a bit of a wake up call, and I wasn't trying to push too hard.

My car ran great. I was driving pretty casually and still was less than a second off my PB (1:29.3). Did 1:30.x's all day in the heat. Definitely time in the car once I start pushing it a bit more later in the season. Still ended up with 4th FTD out of 40+ cars so not bad!

Not the S2K!! Oof, that one hurts. Looks like a total loss? Right rear seems pretty bashed in.

Nice driving though! Car looks to be handling well. That’s weird about the brakes though. What pads are you running again? My R12/R10s have always bedded in the first session out.

Brakes were getting better by the third session, so I'm sure they will only get better from here. I'm going to bleed them before my next track day at FM summer camp in June. Keep in mind time attack sessions are only 3 hotlaps so probably still less action than 1 good HPDE session.

Only pic I got from the track:

FM Summer camp was a success! We had a blast, and it was nice being up there again (last time I went was in 2019 right after getting the car going on the rebuilt motor/new setup).

Loaded up the ole trusty van, with a uhaul trailer, and hit the road! It's about a 8 hour drive towing, which wasn't too bad. Mostly through the mountains which was nice.

When I got there this gentleman (Scott) was working on his k24 turbo car getting it ready for the trackday the next day. I was pretty intimidated by that, and his (not pictured) 275 hoosiers he was going to run on. It's an awesome build that he put together.

Pics are scattered, I didn't take ANY the first track day. But @Roda was there and it was AWESOME meeting him, I wish I got a picture of our cars together. Maybe next time. His car is sick, and so is his tow rig, and his wife and dog were awesome too. So cool meeting people that you've only known from the internet, and specifically our little forum/group.

Scattered pics of some cars I liked:

This guy, Jeb, was awesome and told me all about his car that he's been modifying for the last 20+ years. A HPDE instructor by trade, and was a pleasure to talk to.

Another dope K swapped racekar:

Sonny of 949/supermiata fame was out there in his 1.9L NA car and turned some smokin times. Very cool guy, wish I got to hang out with him more but he was pretty popular

It was cool seeing a whole slew of the KINOD california guys. This car for example I've seen on the internet for a long time now, belongs to Pete, a very nice guy I just met that made the trip down from Canada. The rest of the Kinod crew was awesome as well. Brings me back to ~2009 or so lurking on clubroadster looking at their cars for inspiration.

FM NC with turbo kit was sweet. Sounded nice and moved out pretty well on track!

Ricardo @redursidae made it out with his fresh VVT swap which PERFORMED! Seriously impressed with his car and times he put down.

Random pic I took at FM once I got my "campsite" setup. Was really nice having the van to camp with the lady and doggo.

Went out to dinner with the NM crew. We had an awesome NM turnout and all the buddies did great out there.

Some FM shop pics:

This NB was pretty breathtaking. Just reminds me of Faeflora though, because of the color

Can't go wrong with the fastback.

I was able to squeeze out fastest time of the event. The track was 100*+ and I was dying, but I was able to put together some decent laps and take the W. I was sad that Roda's car wasn't working right, I've seen his driving and I know he wouldn't have been slow.

Funny story about the track, is my first 2 sessions were improperly timed. I was feeling pretty down, it turns out they had mixed up transponders and I didn't know it. I thought I was doing ~73's, which is way off pace for my car, and I couldn't figure out why the hell I was so damn slow.

Both the 1st and 2nd sessions I ended up catching up to traffic and only got 1 clean lap each. But my transponder kept pumping out 72-73's so they kept grouping me with similar cars in that speed. The third session they figured it out, and told me I was actually running 65, 64's which was a huge relief, and got me grouped in group A so I could get some clean runs.

I BARELY inched out Scott in his K24 + turbo + zf + getrag car, which I was psyched about, because the guy is a driver and the car is an absolute weapon.

Vale pass was pretty. Stopped and went on a hike on the way home. This one's out of order.

Got my favorite new Trophy! I was cracking up, it was so cute.

And my camera overheated and shut off during the track day at GJMS (Grand Junction Motor Speedway), but here's an earlier (slower) lap when I was still figuring out the course. I think this was a mid/high 63s run. I ran the car on "low" boost (12psi) like I usually do at tracks. Didn't even try high boost.

All in all it was a fantastic event, with good food/friends/cars, and NO wrenching. Didn't do a damn thing, pretty happy about that. Also happy to say that my turbo car was one of the few turbo cars that seemed to just work, and did it's thing well, thanks to this group and years of development. There's definitely more time in the car, so maybe next year I'll get another stab at the course.

It took me until the sixth or seventh Miata picture to realize why there were so many pictures of Miatas.

Looks like FMSC was a blast! Congrats on what I assume was the fastest lap. Jealous I couldn't be out there.

I think the Miata needs a matching livery with the van.

Edit: I saw the post before the text was added lol.

CONGRATS on the top time!! That's a solid achievement, and especially for the level of competition this year. Be proud of the Tiny Trophy!!

It was fantastic to meet you and Ricardo, and I hope to see you guys at one of the New Mexico tracks one of these days. Or back at FMSC '25, where I hope to have a properly running race car...

Yeah, fastest time overall. I ran on Thursday, which was about 20* hotter, was kinda jealous of the folks running on Friday but it was a nice day for ride alongs!

It was a hoot man, maybe you can meet us out there next year.

The miata needs paint badly, but IDK about matching the van

Thanks Chris!! It was super cool meeting you and your wife, and seeing your car in person. And like I mentioned, let me know anytime you think you might make it to a NM track and we'll plan on meeting you for some fun laps!

Good work, what a pity there is nothing like that here, closest we have is an 'Interstate' competition. Well done on bring home a 'pot', any pot is a good pot, but 'fastest' is the bestest!!

Seconding Z's repaint suggestion!
